Obituary of Mary Bateman Davis

Please share a memory of Mary Bateman to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Bateman Davis passed away Thursday, October 5th at Mapleshire Nursing Home in Morgantown, WV.  Mary was a resident there since 2016. Previously she lived in an assisted living apartment at The Village at Heritage Point.  Mary was 90 years old, born January 26, 1927 in Logan County, WV, daughter of the late James Archibald and Louise Williams Bateman.

Mary was raised in Clarksburg, WV.  She had a large, happy family that consisted of three sisters and three brothers.  She attended Washington Irving High School where she was a majorette.  She worked at the local movie theatre, spent summer days at Maple Lake with her friends and excelled at her studies.  Once enrolled at WVU, she became a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and continued to work with the sorority many years later.

She married Leonard McCutchan Davis of Clarksburg on August 26, 1947.  The couple lived in several places while Dr. Davis pursued his Masters and then PhD in Speech.  But they finally settled in Morgantown where they built a house on Rotary Street to raise their three children.

Mary successfully pursued a career as a realtor.  She started her career at Dorsey & Kiger, and ended at Pat Stewart Realtors.

Mary and Leonard traveled extensively and instilled a love of other cultures in their children.  This love of travel and history are appreciated to this day in all three children.

Once Leonard passed away in June 1999, Mary continued to participate in WVU events, do volunteer work and spent time with friends until her declining health made it impossible to live in her home.  She moved to Heritage Point where she gained a whole new group of friends.  She was very proud that they had a framed photo of her in the café and used her professionally decorated apartment for advertising and to show potential newcomers.

Mary was the widow of Dr. Leonard M. Davis.  She is survived by her sons, Leonard M. Davis, Jr. of Santa Barbara, CA,  James M. Davis of Morgantown, and her daughter, Anne Edmondson Davis of New York City.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Natalie Davis who is studying at a University in Santa Barbara, and Andrew Davis who is studying at the University of Amsterdam.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, from 2-5 p.m.
