Obituary of James Joseph Stevens
James “Jim” Joseph Stevens, 84, of Morgantown, passed away on February 13, 2018, at Mon Health Center.
Jim was born in National, West Virginia, on January 22, 1934, the son of the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Miker) Stevens.
Jim was a member of St. John University Parish in which he served as Eucharistic Minister. He was a foreman at Pace Tech for 25 years from which he retired at age 80. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War; was a long time member of Knights of Columbus and past Grand Knight, and was actively involved in arranging for the new building in Star City.
Jim is survived by his wife, of 34 years, Tressa (Sowers) Stevens; one son Dr. Jeffery Sponsler and wife, Charlotte Nelson, of Wasilla, Alaska; grandchildren Stephen Sponsler and Kalea Sponsler; siblings Betty McMillen and husband, Bob, and Carl Lee Stevens as well as sisters-in-law, Cora Sue Stevens and Dottie Stevens.
In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by one infant son and three brothers: Bobbie E., Billy G., and David T. Stevens.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Friday, February 16th from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held in the funeral home at 7:30 PM on Friday to conclude the evening visitation. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John University Parish, 1481 University Ave., Morgantown, on Saturday, February 17th at 10:30 AM with Father Justin Blanc as celebrant. Entombment will follow at St. Mary Peace Gar den Mausoleum.
