Obituary of Hubert Ernest Martin
Hubert Ernest Martin, 98, went to be with the Lord on March 14, 2019.
Hubert was born at home on 240 Franklin St., Morgantown on July 12, 1920, and was the son of the late Anna McClure Martin and Joseph Wharton Martin.
Dr. Martin graduated from Morgantown High School in 1938 and went on to pursue degrees from West Virginia University finishing his A.B. in 1944. While in college, he was a member of the WVU Rifle Team and won the State doubles tennis championship. He finished his dental degree in 1945 at the University of Pittsburgh.
Hubert entered the United States Army Dental Corp as a Captain in 1945 and served under General George Patton, 3rd Army Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany until 1947. While stationed in Germany, Hubert met his future wife, Gertraud, who worked as an interpreter at the Army headquarters.
Hubert and Gertraud were married in New York City in the "Little Church Around the Corner" in 1948 while Dr. Martin worked on further studies at the Dewey School of Orthodontia.
After living briefly in Pittsburgh, Dr. Martin set up practice in Morgantown specializing in orthodontics. In addition to this private practice, Dr. Martin served as a part-time clinical professor at West Virginia University's School of Dentistry for 32 years.
Hubert had many interests throughout his life including antique furniture, clocks, watches, and cars. In addition, Hubert and Gertraud had a small beef cattle farm which is a source of great pleasure for all members of the family.
Dr. Martin is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Gertraud, his daughter, Elisabeth Martin Lawson, son Dr. Chris Martin and wife Rosemarie Martin, son, Glen Martin and wife Judy Martin. Grandchildren include Kathryn Lawson and husband Cameron Woodall, Andrew Lawson, Molly Burnash and husband Josh, Jeffrey Martin, Christy Martin, Allan Martin, and Audrey Martin. Great grandchildren are Owen Burnash and William Woodall.
A private family committal service will take place at the East Oak Grove Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Sunday, March 24th from 1 pm until the time of the memorial service at 2 PM with Rev. Will Coulson officiating.
