Mary Cunningham Clevenger, 84, passed away peacefully at JW Ruby Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020, She was born on October 7, 1935, at Pisgah, Preston County, WV, daughter of Arleigh and Inez Benson Cunningham. Mary graduated from Bruceton High School, Potomac State and Fairmont State College with a degree in Education. She taught elementary school after raising her children. She married James Patrick Clevenger of Webster Springs, WV on June 14, 1958, at Spruce Street United Methodist Church. They were devoted and loving partners for over 61 years until her death. Mary is survived by her husband Jim, brother Scott and wife Janet, two sons, Joe and wife Beth, Jimmy and wife Ruthie, son-in-law JJ, granddaughters Katie, Maggie, Molly and husband Jacob, grandsons Quinn, Wes, Walt and Ian and great-grandson Noah. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jean, brother Bob, and daughter Kim. Mary was the last surviving active charter member of the Mountaineer Women's Club; taught at Suncrest, Easton and North Elementary schools and was an active member of the Suncrest United Methodist Church for over 50 years, providing service and leadership in the United Methodist Women and as a Circle chairperson. She was a member of the West Virginia PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter B. Mary was active in life at the Village at Heritage Point where she and Jim settled for the last few years of her life. Mary always loved vacations at the beach; cooking for family, friends and the church; tailgating for WVU football and socializing with the hundreds of family and friends whom she touched through her many activities. In retirement, Mary and Jim traveled extensively, visited all of the lower 48 states, and wintered in South Padre Island, Texas. But it was trips to see her children and grandchildren that were dearest to Mary, as she was beloved by them. Our family would like to thank the nursing staff on the 10th, 5th and 9th floors of Ruby hospital. Their talent and skill were outstanding, but the compassion and caring given Mary and her family were truly unbelievable. They are angels.
