My deepest sympathies. May the Lord’s perpetual light shine upon him. Growing up in the St. Francis crew with Chris, Mr Wheeler was always around serving as a good example for us young men. When I entered the Army he was always very supportive and whenever I was lucky enough to run into him when I was home on leave we had very good conversations. My prayers are with Chris and all the family.

Uncle Bob was always an Engineer to me through my 20s and 30s; he had this weird since of ethics that I did not appreciate for the first 40 years of my life. The backbone of his morals and principles were difficult for me to first understand, but his wisdom and guidance were developmental inspiring me to become a better person in all aspects of my life. I truly appreciated his concepts of leadership, responsibility, and personal accountability both for himself and for others. The responsibilities he maintained were inspiring. I believe he truly fit himself to be of maximum service to God, family, friends, and people around him, even when it was difficult.
I miss him dearly and am sorry I could not make it to his service. I wish I could have spent more time with him over the past two years; I think he would have enjoyed the better me, and I would have had a chance to thank him for helping me develop into a better human being. I know we would have got along on an entirely different level. My thoughts and prayers go out to his immediate family and friends. Hopefully, I will see him when I move on, and we can discuss growth in personal goals and responsibility.

I had the fortune of meeting Bob while his wife was being treated at the WVU Cancer Center. We had some great talks about cancer research, clinical care and of Wheeling as we were both graduates of Wheeling Central. Bob was intelligent, compassionate and kind. He would intermittently bring in a box of ice cream treats which he would disperse to both the clinical and research staff in the Cancer Center. I will certainly miss our discussions and send peace and prayers to the family and other loved ones.
Sincerely,
Bill Petros

Dear Julie, Kristin, and Beth,
I was deeply saddened to hear about Bob. For so many years he and I have enjoyed sharing our delight in you three ladies and your exceptional accomplishments. Bob knew I was always a ready audience for his latest stories about you and, of course, in later years stories about the grandchildren. He has left a powerful legacy as did Linda. They were a very special couple that will be greatly missed. Sorry I'm out of town, but have you all in my heart.

I worked for many years with Bob at NIOSH. During his 20 years at NIOSH, he made significant contributions to the miner surveillance program, which greatly improved the health and safety of coal miners. He was also well known and respected as an industrial hygienist in ACGIH, being very active in annual conferences. He will be missed.

Just a thought expanding on Bob's obituary regarding his influence in the field of industrial hygiene "around the world." At mining safety and health conferences in Australia (Cairns and Perth) in the late 1990s, it was my observation that Bob was well known and highly respected among his professional peers across the pond. His influence was substantial in that land where tall poppies are not so appreciated, as he was always so more thoughtful and low key. Big thoughts delivered at a low volume. Definitely a class act.
