The Carpenters were my dad's absolute favorite band. He listened to them a lot, especially if he was sad or needed comfort. He was a very enotionally complex and sensitive person that not a lot of people really ubderstood. I do, because I think a lot like him. I'm actually a lot like him in many ways, so sometimes we clashed, but it was never anything that lasted for long.
We played the Carpenters for him as we all said goodbye yesterday. When I woke up this morning, this one particular Karen Carpenter song was stuck in my head on a loop, so I looked up the lyrics. It gave me goosebumps. Now that I looked up the lyrics to read, it's not playing in my head a loop anymore.
Sometimes things feel like they are manipulated by a lost loved one. I dont know if that's the case here, but the lyrics are very fitting to a message he'd probably want to get to me. He'd definitely do it through a Karen Carpenter song, that is so very like him.
The lyrics:
When I was young
I'd listen to the radio
Waitin' for my favorite songs
When they played I'd sing along
It made me smile.
Those were such happy times
And not so long ago
How I wondered where they'd gone
But they're back again
Just like a long lost friend
All the songs I loved so well.
When they get to the part
Where he's breakin' her heart
It can really make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more.
Lookin' back on how it was
In years gone by
And the good times that I had
Makes today seem rather sad
So much has changed.
It was songs of love that
I would sing to then
And I'd memorize each word
Those old melodies
Still sound so good to me
As they melt the years away.
All my best memories
Come back clearly to me
Some can even make me cry.
Just like before
It's yesterday once more.

Such a shock to hear this. Mike will be truly missed in the neighborhood. Every time I think of Mike I think of that dang monkey he had that would attack us when we walked through the yard. He always had the best sense of humor and told you what he thought. Gonna miss you Mike. Thinking of you Merlene.

Mike , never thought I would write this for you. Rip our great friend and family member . Will never forget the fun we all had, those laughs that we could not stop. The dances, films , scaring us in the old house. I will always be here for Merlene and Jamie. Keep them all laughing up there and don't forget to save us a spot up there. You will always live in our heart ❤
