Phil and I met when he worked at the WVU Health Sciences Center. I would sit in meetings with him from time-to-time. I would also pass him in the hallway/elevator as he was on his way to the Human Performance Lab, coffee/tea cup in hand. Once in a while, we would call one another with a question or to convey information. When I think of these encounters, I remember Phil's infectious smile and gentle, quiet voice.
My best friend, Rebecca Miller, was also Phil's co-worker who quickly became his close friend. He and Becky were always joking and laughing, creating a friendly and warm atmosphere. His jokes and antics could always bring her out of a bad mood. This was one of his special gifts and I will miss the privilege of being witness to it.
While all his loved ones and friends will mourn Phil's death, it will be hardest for you, Melissa and Benjamin. Please remember that as long as the two of you live, Phil will live on through you. And while death cheated you of precious time with Phil, love cheats death every time. It does not end when someone leaves this earth - Love is Immortal. The love you feel for and from Phil will be with you always.
May God and your precious memories of Phil bring comfort and strength as you grieve. The two of you will be in my thoughts and prayers,
