As so many have said, Dave was simply a loving and lovely person. There is no higher compliment. Our hearts are with Anne and the family.

Dave will always be in my heart and mind as more than just a valued colleague and co-worker, but he was such a treasured friend who exhibited class and grace in all that he did. Some of my fondest memories of him were sitting around with our wives trying out new types of craft beers and telling stories about the crazy days of our early careers in the oilfield. Dave’s love and devotion for Anne and his two kids, Robin and Mary, and his grandchildren was to be admired. I am so glad that he was able to spend some good years doing the things he really loved like helping out on the farm and at the farmer’s market, and cruising around on his kayak. RIP my friend, you were a good man! Anne, our sincere condolences to your family for your loss. May God’s peace comfort you during this time. We love you!

I am deeply sorry to hear of Dr Oldhams passing. He hated me calling him that, as everyone knows how humble is has always been. My prayers are with Ann and the family which always spoke of out of his deep love and passion. Like many others, the BAR was set high by David and we strive each day to measure up. Dave and I shared a special memory that we both know where Minnekata is in Fall River South Dakota. May God's light shine on David's face I pray.

My heart goes out to Ann and the family. I feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to know and work with him over the years. I wish there had been many more. He was admired and respected by his peers for the passion of his profession, his depth of knowledge and his spirit of teaching others, always with a smile on his face and always handy with a witty remark. He was a great friend and I shall miss him very much.

I had the honor of "working for" Dave from 2005-2008. I always told him he was the best "boss" I ever had, although it was hard to think of him as a "boss". I looked forward to going to work every day because he made the work enjoyable and he was delightful to be around. He taught me so much, which was the springboard to my success in a career in mining after I moved from Morgantown. He and I shared a love for maps. To this day, I'll choose my old atlas over google maps any day! Every year he gave me an "Employee of the Year" certificate, (although I was the only employee!) Just another example of his wit and humor. I was fortunate to stay in touch with Dave and Anne after I moved to the other side of the country, and we even were able to get in a few visits over the years (of course, side trips for geology excursions were always their main objective). I still chuckle at his story about when his kids were little, he took them to Death Valley for vacation!
Rest in Peace, Dave. You left us way too soon, but our memories of you will live on always in our hearts. My sincere sympathy to Anne, Robin, Mary and their families.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dave’s death. Please accept my prayers and sincere sympathy for his family. I would be remiss if I didn’t write about the impact Dave had on me and others who were fortunate to work under his keen tutelage at Stone. He reminded me of the diligence and discipline it takes to be a good geologist. He shared not only his knowledge, but his values. He was a remarkable guy. He accepted nothing at face value. Only after triple checking every fact did he proceed. He possessed a rare talent as a true oil-finder. He really enjoyed sharing his vast knowledge. I’ll always remember his counsel, generosity, compassion and integrity. My expectations and achievements will always be tested by the standards he set.

Dave was a wonderful man that left this earth far too soon. I will always remember him for the gentleman that he was and his solid character. Dave loved his family very much, and professionally he had a very strong passion for geology. Dave was a very bright person yet kind, humble, and a helpful friend to all that he met. Dave had my upmost respect and I am grateful for having known him.

Dave always had an incredible wit and sense of timing when it came to humor. He was a true friend . I really enjoyed talking with him and learned so much from our talks together. I am also a geologist and truly relished the great scientific discussions we would have. Dave will be missed by all who knew him. I wish peace for his family during this difficult time. Ron McGlade

I will really miss Dave, as he was a warm, generous person, who was always interesting to talk to. He was very helpful to me and my students, and I learned a lot from him. We used to often meet at Dave and Anne's home before strolling over to Mountain Stage shows.

Dave was a familiar face in the Department of Geology and Geography here at WVU. Over the years, I had opportunities to learn about the compilation of work he'd undertaken in the Denver area. He was patient, thorough and innovative in his work. One always had confidence in his perspectives and I learned much from him as did many others. In recent years I'd run into him less frequently, and enjoyed catching up, hearing about family and the many other things he was up to. He will be missed by many.

I'm so sorry to hear the news about Dave. He was one of my WVU Field Camp advisors in 2006. My first memory of Dave was picking him up at the airport in Cody, WY and then eating Rocky Mountain oysters at a local BBQ joint. Attached is a picture from field camp when we went to Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho. What a kind and patient man he was. He will be sorely missed.

Dave played an important role in developing the WVU Geology Field Camp exercises in South Dakota and Montana. Here are a couple of photos of Dave in the field in 2002. He was a really fine geologist and a patient teacher. The photo of Dave looking at roadside geology in Deadwood, South Dakota was taken by Steve Kite. The photo of Dave standing beside an outcrop in Montana was taken by Tom Kammer. Photos uploaded by TK.

Anne and entire Oldham family. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. I don't know why but I guess there is a plan to take the good ones first but the rest of us are left to suffer the loss. I lost George Oct. 23 of this past year and life will never be the same again. With Dave, it was far too quickly with no real time to prepare. I can only hope that all of you will give each other the peace and understanding you all deserve. The only thing we can do is go on and make the best of a terrible situation. Once again, my thoughts are with you.

We, at the Geology Program of WVU, were very saddened to hear the news of Dave's passing. For years our Field Camp students benefitted from his geological expertise and good cheer. We were lucky to benefit from his willingness to spend his valuable time out in the field sharing his love of geology with the younger generation. He will be sorely missed. We send our best wishes to his family at this time of loss.
