John Shoaf is an icon. I forgot when I first met John, but it's close to 40 years ago. As we go through life we meet many people. Some leave a lifelong impression on us. John was such a person. He touched many lives. Mine included. His spirit was intense. Our common interest was in the history of automobiles, Sunbeams in particular, and diners. His Valentine diner and my involvement with a Valentine diner bonded us with our mutual interest in Sunbeam cars.
John was part of our Sunbeam car club,Tigers East- Alpines East group. The club has annual events all over the East Coast and Midwest. John would pop in like a Whack-O-Mole with a pink Playboy Tiger or one with a continental kit and steal the show. It wasn't just his cars. It was John and his high-intensity presentation. John and his passion for all things historical will sadly be missed but live on in our personal history of life's experiences.

So sorry to hear of the loss of Mr Shoaf! He taught all of my kids at South and my mom and her husband, Wanda and Dave Buck, were in the Dream Machines car club with him years ago. Many fond memories of car shows and just him being the corky, fun guy he was. RIP sir and fly with the angels like you so deserve! Prayers for peace for you, Melodie!

I'm really sorry to hear of Mr. Shoaf's passing. He was my 8th grade science teacher and always made the classes fun and interesting. He helped us develop critical thinking by guessing his sock color based on his outfit color. He will be missed.

Mr. Shoaf was by far the best teacher I ever had. Even outside of Class he was a true gem, always there to help anyone and always with a laugh. I always remember trying to guess what color his socks were based on his tie.

Robert, I'm John's life partner of 42 years. John loved having students use "scientific reasoning" to determine the colo of his socks. We searched many Goodwills looking for colorful ties to make it more difficult to guess the color of his socks.
He would appreciate your kind words regarding his teaching!!

Very sad day today, one of my all time favorite teachers has passed away. Mr. Shoaf……I will never forget. My favorite time in his class at South Jr. High was when myself and another girl was making siren noises and he told us to either go to the office for detention or get up in front of the class and act like a chicken. Well, guess what I did? I acted like a chicken. Throughout the years into my adult years and probably within the past 5-7 years Mr. Shoaf never forgot me and still called me Chicken. He will be missed. I and I’m sure so many will never forget Mr. Shoaf. He was one of the best!

My condolences. Mr. Shoaf was my science teacher at MJHS. One of the few science classes I actually looked forward to going to. I became a teacher myself and can only hope I was 1/2 as loved by my students as Mr. Shoaf was.
