As the parent of John's patient, I wanted to express our condolences and deepest sympathies to his family at this time. Some of the best people pass away far too early and leave a hole in the hearts and lives of those who knew him. I'm sorry for your loss. We as a community are heartbroken to lose such a positive presence. Prayers to you at this time.

John was always a pleasure to work with. He brought the most wonderful combination buoyant joyfulness and compassion to every patient interaction. Like so many other people, I will always remember his enormous smile and infectious laugh. He made so many people’s lives better.

I saw John often in the clinic, in the hospital and around the Health Science Center.
I talked with John, in both "official" and impromptu circumstances. I would say that he was always forward-looking, and talked excitedly about the future.
We were both on the Dept of Pediatrics Promotion Committee, and met weekly for about 12 weeks. Every week, it was someone's unofficial job to make a joke to make John laugh, because he had the most wonderful laugh that would make everyone else smile or laugh in turn! This year he was going up for promotion to Associate Professor, so he could not be on the committee, but I told John that I would save a place for him to return to the committee the following year, because he was such a positive contributor.
John and I would also meet in his role as the director of the developing Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for the new Children's Hospital, and in my role as the Children's Hospital Chief Medical Officer. John was an expert in this, and had ideas for state-of-the art enhancements, plans for increasing the safety for the patines, and we would talk about next steps and how to break through bottlenecks. His passion and expertise for improving the care for children with epilepsy was also very forward-looking and will continue to benefit the children in our state and hospital for many years.
I think of him fondly, and will miss him, as will we all.

I didn't know Dr. Magruder well, but I would see him every so often at work when I went to pick up mail for my department. No matter what was going on, he always seemed so positive and happy, something that couldn't help but make you smile, even if you were having a bad day.

My first thought upon meeting John years ago was that I was happy that Katie found such a wonderful person. He was quick to laugh and kind and curious. He had a personality that was open and made you feel welcome immediately. The world is poorer for his loss.

I used to share a workroom with John when I worked in Peds GI, from 2015-2019 I saw him at work regularly. He always brought a light hearted energy to the room. We have children of similar ages, so our children were often the center of discussion. My heart aches for you, the world shines a little duller now. But, I can tell how much he loved his kids and I am sure he will always be with with you and watching over you. Hugs and Love. Jaci

John had the most infectious laugh. You could hear him from across the hospital and know who it was. I can still hear that laugh.
I know we have not seen each other in years, but I always felt like John was one of those people I could see and it would be like no time had passed.
I pray that his soul has eternal rest and I hope to hear his laughter again some day.
