Sometime in 2006-7, I was asked by a neighbor who was a student at WVU Law School to participate as an "expert witness" in what I am assuming was a Mock Trial program. I was a struggling single mother in Nursing school and having a rough time, but I seriously prepared for and enjoyed this experience. As I was leaving the stand, the "judge" paused the proceeding to ask me if I had ever considered becoming an attorney. That person was Larry Starcher, a justice of the WV Supreme Court of Appeals. I keep his question on a plaque in my office as reminder of the day my journey started on a new path toward the rest of my life. After working as a RN for 10 years, going to law school part time, and raising my children who eventually flew from my nest, I passed the Colorado bar exam in 2018. Rest in peace, Judge. I am forever grateful and will do my best to inspire others as you continue to inspire me.

Q: What 3 words best describe Larry and why?
A: Accepting expert information.
Justice Starcher’s 1999 multi-city hearings on the minimal mental health services available in WV helped change today’s attitudes and availability of care for mentally challenged persons. (2023)

Uncle Larry, I'm going to miss you a great deal. I love you greatly, which you knew. I will never forget the help you gave me, in order to get my college education degree. It was super living with you, Aunt Barbara, Molli, and Vic, while attending WVU. I learned a great deal from you. Hugs and prayers to Molli, Vic, Becky, and all the family.

I met Justice Starcher on my first day as a new faculty member at the College of Law 14 years ago. The dean was showing me potential offices I might claim. One of those, she explained, was at the moment occupied by a Visiting Professor, who turned out to be Justice Starcher. He was in the office working when the dean and I stopped by. She explained to him that I was a new faculty member and she was looking for office space for me. I naturally felt chagrined at the idea of asking a Supreme Court Justice to move to a different office, but Justice Starcher cheerfully insisted that I should have it! His eminence was exceeded only by his humility, and that is an example I will always remember and strive to emulate. I always loved his great stories and his great spirit. Condolences to all of his family, friends, loved ones, and the countless others whose lives he touched throughout his life and career.

To the Starcher family I am so sorry for your loss. Justice Starcher was a wonderful judge the reason I say that is because he put my first husband Dale Alexander in jail for 2 1/2 years. The charge was domestic violence. Thank you Justice Larry V. Starcher for your service. Now you can hear court cases up in Heaven with God. God bless the Starcher family at this time Rest in peace

I was blessed to have an office adjacent to Larry's at the Law School and to know his daughter, wife, and several grandchildren. Larry was a patient mentor who always had something wise to say. Larry made me laugh and he made me think. I will miss him. My sympathy to his family and all who loved him.

Was fortunate to spend time with Justice Starcher at the NCBE Annual Bar Admissions Conference in the early 2000’s. He was always concerned with the entrance requirements balancing gate keeping obligations with ensuring everyone had access to the justice system. He was humorous, down-to-earth, and practical in the administration of justice. He also met my father who served at WVSU, and was kind enough to say a good word about me. Condolences to the family, WV lost a good man.

Larry was my Sunday School Teacher and friend. He had an impact on me - especially growing up after my Dad passed away. He is one of those guys, and we are lucky to have them, who want to make an impact on people's lives to make them better. He did that all through his life. We are lucky to have had him as part of the Morgantown and WV Community. He will be missed. Godspeed Larry!
