I came to know Chuck while playing hockey with him at the Morgantown Ice Rink. He was that good mate happy to see each week. He was a hard worker with a great attitude. Chuck would talk about his family and work. He was so talented yet humble. I moved away and have not seen Chuck in years. So sorry to hear of his passing. Years ago I purchased one of his cherry jewelry boxes for my mother…Now passed on to my daughter.
Rest in peace, my friend.

Chuck Matala was a gentleman and a “ gentle man!”
Prayers continue for his family-during this time of transition…and emotional roller coaster.
“The love comes now-in letting go the ones we love so dearly…And thanking God for the time…He has given us with them…here on the earth” Quote from Patrick Naville

Today was a sad today. I heard of Chuck’s passing and it’s hard to believe he’s gone. For 13 years I worked with Chuck at Davis Kitchen & Tile. He was my boss, my mentor and my friend. He was smart, funny and a true renaissance man. Chuck was one of the most creative and knowledgeable people I’ve ever known. His interests were varied and he enjoyed sharing his talents with others. Most of what I know about construction and kitchen installation I owe to him.
You will be missed “Chuckles”.

The The news of Chuck’s passing is truly heart. Chuck and I go way back for decades. We worked on many projects together, including many signs and, notably, the complete studio news set for WDTV in 1980. Most memorably, Chuck drove his old tan Ford van to Charlotte to accompany me to my Mother’s funeral in 1990. I am great full that he brought an extra necktie. Chuck asked me to design his business stationary which was another great project that we worked on together. I am and always be in awe of Chucks many talents and skills and I am thrilled to have a number of pieces of his furniture and other works in our house. My heartfelt condolences to Sally, Jennifer and the rest of the clan. Chuck, I love you. Rest easy, Brother… rest easy.

I coached hockey with Chuck many times through the years. He was a great mentor for me and an exceptional role model for the players. I’m sure his interactions with all the kids he coached were positive influences that they carried into their adult lives.

Chuck was my friend since childhood. Among the first and the best that I still look back on as having been instrumental in my development. He was two years older than me, and that's a big deal when you are young. Chuck was a "big deal" to me and I looked up to him a lot. We were next door neighbors. It would be hard to tell how many hours we spent riding our bicycles around in the neighborhood. I frequently lingered over at the Matalas during dinner time --- Chuck's parents were great! We regularly pitched a tent behind our houses, played sandlot baseball and football. He was a natural athlete, and always better than me! As we got older I came to learn about Chuck's creative talents. I admired and still remember the statue of a weary Vietnam GI that he did in art class his Senior year. Several years later he designed and crafted a unique desk and credenza for my office which I have cherished for over 40 years. Eventually, we saw each other infrequently; but Chuck was one of those people you could just pick up with again as if you had just seen them a week ago. He was enthusiastic, vibrant, and funny. He was always good company. He has always been a good person. I was stunned to learn last fall that he was ill. I regret not having grasped how severe it was, and for not having been there for my old friend. In that sense, Chuck has taught me one last lesson that I commit to follow: "Time is fleeting. Don't put things off." My life is better for having known Chuck. I will never forget him. I pray that God will have mercy on his soul; and bring consolation to his loving family, and his many friends.
