We were so sorry to hear of Walt's passing. The Kordek family were our wonderful neighbors for many years. Walt was always cheerful and ready to lend a hand when needed, or to offer his quick wit for a good laugh. Time shared with him revealed a man of modesty with keen insight. One thing always stood out--Walt loved his family and the natural world with equal passion.

Dear Fran,
We are so sad to hear Walt's passing. He was so kind and patiently taught us so much about birds and and their behaviors.
So much beyond that, he was a genuine nature lover and we appreciated all he taught us over the years.

I am so sorry to hear of Walt's passing. He was a long-time colleague when I worked at the USFWS. He had a great love for the fish and wildlife of WV and was an strong advocate for things he cared about. Walt had a way of getting things done, and finding ways to make things work despite the bureaucratic hurdles we all inevitably faced. He also had a sharp wit, and could be counted on to provide welcome humorous relief to dull or tense meetings. After he retired, we continued to share stories of our garden successes (and failures) and traded books about places we had traveled to or where we wanted to go. He will be missed.

Walt was a good friend and trusted colleague at the beginnings of the West Virginia Master Naturalist program, a program that would not have existed save for Walt's encouragement and support. Walt was my first professional boss after I completed graduate school at Ohio State. I worked under his supervision at WV DNR Wildlife Resources in Elkins, WV from 1994 to 1998. I thoroughly enjoyed Walt's insights and leadership. He challenged me and always offered support - when "the rope ran out" as I recall him saying. Diana my wife also worked with the Biometrics Unit and learned a great deal. Walt and Fran would have us over for annual pesto dinner which was always delicious and a lovely time of conversation. For young people getting started in life, the Kordek's were wonderful mentors. May you rest in peace Walt. Sincerely, Paul J. Kinder, Jr.

I was so sorry to hear of Walt's passing. I have so many good memories of him, our work relationship, and our friendship over the more than four decades that we knew each other.
