Obituary of George Vasilios Demanelis

George Vasilios Demanelis, 71, of Morgantown, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at Mon Health Medical Center. He was born April 2, 1951, in Morgantown, son of the late Areti Maris Demanelis and the late Vasilios Anastasios "Bill" Demanelis. George graduated Morgantown High school in 1969. He went on to earn a Bachelor's degree and in 1980 earned a Master's degree in Safety Management from WVU. He worked for the Welfare Department for several years. In 1985 he was named Executive Director of the Pace training Center where he enjoyed helping folks with special needs. He retired from WVU after many years. George had a huge heart and enjoyed helping others, the compassion he showed to all humans was indescribable. He had so much love to give. He was Greek Orthodox by faith. As a young man he served as an altar boy and later in life he was a member of the Parish Council of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and served a term as president. He was a current member of NRA and previously worked at MECCA 911. As a young mane he was active in the Civil Air Patrol and enjoyed many days at Cheat Lake with friends. George was a quiet man, but when he spoke, he made his words count. He was witty and possessed a clever sense of humor. George took his responsibilities seriously. He loved gadgets and computers. He bravely fought prostate cancer for several years and never gave up his positive attitude. In addition to his mother, left to cherish his memories are his daughter Maria Demanelis Dunn and granddaughters Sophia and Lia of Orlando, Florida. His son Christopher and grandchildren, Kane, Rene, Chas, Carter and Mazikeen of Morgantown, sister Elene Georgopoulos (Dimitrios) and a niece Zoe (Barrett) Horton and grandniece, LulaMae, and nephew Thanasi Georgopoulos of Texas. Brother-in-law, Rod Calvert (Trish) and their children, and Jim Calvert (Cathy) and their children, cousin Tony Demanelis as well as many great nieces and nephews, cousins and aunts and uncles in Greece and the United States. George is preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Calvert Demanelis; Konstantinos "Gus" Demanelis and aunt Chrysanthi of Morgantown, WV; cousin Ernie Demanelis of Cleveland, OH, Grandparents Anastasios "Ernie" and Vasiliki Demanelis of Morgantown, WV and Maternal Grandparents Athanasios and Sophia Maris of Ioannina, Greece. Friends and Family Visitation will be at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Morgantown, 447 Spruce St. Morgantown WV, Thursday, March 30th, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 am. with Fr. Jon Emanuelson Officiating. George will be laid next to his wife following the service at Lawnwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations are encouraged to be made in George's memory to the American Diabetes Association Attn: Service Center, P.O.
