Sampy - It seems like yesterday when we met at your business on Beechurst Ave. I learned a lot from you about business, but most importantly, about trust. You trusted a couple of college kids with a lot of your money (in accounts receivable). You helped me get to where I am today. I'll be forever thankful for your friendship.

My mom (Brenda Hardin Melson, Sampy's cousin) has spoken so highly of Sampy over the years and was just delighted that he made the trip to St. Louis for my wedding in 2009. His kindess was evident as he took such good care of "Grandpa Woody" Hardin (Woodrow Wilson Hardin, brother of Sampy's father) throughout the day. It meant so much to us to have his caring presence!

Among my fondest childhood memories are frequent road trips with my parents from Charleston to Welch and Berwind to visit Hardin family relatives. Seeing my “little” cousins, Sampy and Kathy, was a highlight of those visits. Being 10 years older than Sampy I was off to college while he was still in elementary school. Even as time and distance kept our meetings at a minimum, I’ve always felt close to Sampy and had him sit right next to me at the dinner following my daughter’s wedding more than 10 years ago. Sampy’s strength, kindness, loyalty, and love of life and family will continue to inspire me from now on.

The quiet member of our class and team. He played next to me at guard and was a vital component of WHS football. I enjoyed our visit several years ago, and hoped we could have another. My prayers to his family, rest in peace my friend.

There weren't many days growing up where I didn’t spend some time with Sampy and Big Al. Lots of great memories of Sampy. He was a scrapper on the football field. We spent many hours in the weight room above the MCNB Bank getting ready for the famed 2-a-days in the first week of August. He was a great friend, loyal confidant, honest, and well respected. Miss you brother. May you now rest in peace and enjoy reuniting with your parents and friends!

One of my all-time favorite photos. Big Sampy, little Sampy, and Mae Stockdale in 2015 at Kathy's house on Mayfield Rd.

Dear Jane and Brock, I am so sorry to learn of your loss. I am grateful for Sampy (and Jane's) warm embrace of my son, Michael, who spent many hours hanging out with Brock in your home during high school. I hope loving memories of Sampy bring you peace in the difficult days ahead. Yours in Sympathy, Trina Karolchik Wafle

Sampy and I grew up in Welch together, members of the same church and members of the same class all through school. His father and my father were also classmates at Big Creek High School. I mourn this loss; give thanks to God for the gift of Sampy's life; and pray God's comfort and strength for his surviving family and loved ones.
