I worked in the Chemistry Department for 4 years and my husband, Bill, worked with him for over 10 years. He always had a smile and a kind word. I heard many students say he was a hard taskmaster but they always said he was a great teacher. Rest in peace Doc Nakon.

I just found out about this and would like to extend my condolences to Dr. Nakon's family and share some of my memories of him. Dr. Nakon was without a doubt the best teacher I've ever had. He always welcomed students' questions and explained everything so that, if one was attentive, the subject matter became crystal clear. He treated everyone formally and with respect, yet was also a bit of a father figure. You never had to look hard to find him, because he was always surrounded by a gaggle of students asking him questions. Despite the large enrollment in his classes, he knew each and every one of us by name. After the semester ended, I ran into him on High St. and he invited me to get some pizza with him. Later in life, I'd run into him at Kegler's Sports Bar once in a while, where he was still talking chemistry with alumni. Wherever he went, he brought smiles to people's faces. Dr. Nakon was truly one of the country's outstanding science educators. He should have been on The Great Courses, as his lectures were works of art. I'm really going to miss him. Thank you, Dr. Nakon, for making me love a topic I used to fear, and thank you for being such a welcoming and generous individual. You made an impact on more lives than you could ever know and will remain forever loved.

Dr Nakon was a legend and hero to the community of his students. In 1980 some of the residences at Dadisman Hall became tired of hearing “what Nakon said today” from the engineering students whom frequently quoted what they had heard or learned in the Chem 15 lecture hall. In our sophomore year he was invited to our party at 367 Falling Run Road, and several people at the party were happy to finally meet “the godlikeegend” and man of doctor Nakon, AKA Nakon. After hearing some of their stories about him, Dr Nakon told one sophomore to hold up their glass of beer, and as he signaled with his right index finger, he promised to part-it (like Moses had done with his staff to the Red Sea). We all laughed and after that he was just another person, as we all were, who had came for the beer and fun conversation. He left early that night, but in true Nakon fashion he later knew and asked about some of the events that had occurred that night, after he had left. To this day i continue to get inspiration from Dr Nakon, and just last spring i purchase another copy of his dimensional analysis workbook (along with a solutions manual).

He was my professor for Chem 101 in 1988. I still remember him whenever I do dimensional analysis. I am a Civil Engineer and run to materials testing laboratory. I teach his method to my children (aspiring engineers).

I will miss his smiling face always greeting me outside, and watching his tomato plants grow on the back patio. I had the pleasure of booking a trip to Poland for him and his family while working at a local travel agency and he taught me so much about the area and culture while I worked on that trip. He was such a kind and joyful person who will be missed.

Bob was such fun to be around. My funniest memory of him was when we were in the Dells and my sister Barb, Bob and I went to the lodge for drinks. We laughed and had such a good time we overstayed our welcome. The owners asked politely if we would leave so they could go home and if we did they would give us free breakfast coupons! He will turly be missed.

We are so very sorry for your loss. A wonderfully talented and very kind soul. Always great to catch up by phone. I will miss his Polish Christmas cards, straw, and Oplatek. Remembering him dancing with a bottle of RC cola in his hand - a usual sight on a late Sunday morning in the living room of Mary and Tony's home on Mozart Street. He was a great intellect and a great dancer! You will be missed so. You'll always have my admiration and love. RIP, Bobby.
