Obituary of Mary Kay Teresa Mortimer
Please share a memory of Mary Kay to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Kay Mortimer, 70, of Wintersville, Ohio went home to Lord on Thursday, July 20, 2023 after a brief stay at Sienna Skilled Nursing Facility in Wintersville.
Mary Kay was born in Brookville, PA on December 18, 1952, the daughter of the late Keith Mortimer and Bessie (Shakley) Mortimer. The family spent four years in East Brady, PA before moving to Morgantown, WV.
Mary Kay is survived by her sister, Britta Kiger, many dear cousins, and countless friends and co-workers who have always meant so much to Mary Kay. As it said on a plaque in her house - "It takes a long time to grow old friends" - Mary Kay knew how to grow friends, nurture relationships and keep them. Treasured as Aunt Mary Kay to the Potvin's and many others, she will be deeply missed for all the life and love she constantly poured out on others. Mary Kay loved the Lord, was a faithful prayer warrior and never hesitated to look for ways to alleviate the sufferings of others, whether mental or physical. She will be remembered for her compassionate listening and her eagerness to draw others out and build them up. She was adventurous, very artistic with a special flair for watercolor painting, and never tired of laughing at old stories.
Mary Kay was a nursing professor at Franciscan University, the University of North Carolina where she did post-doctoral studies, as well as Texas A & M. She earned a BSN from West Virginia University, held Master's degrees in Nursing and Pastoral Counseling and earned her PhD in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. Mary Kay also worked at Torrance State Hospital where she facilitated grief groups.
Mary Kay was a member of Holy Family Church in Steubenville, Ohio where a Memorial Mass will be held in celebration of her life at 11:00 am on Monday, July 31, 2023.
Many thanks to all her friends and family, the staff at Magnolia Manor and Sienna staff for the care and loved you showed her as she finished her race.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Franciscan Sisters T.O.R. in Toronto, Ohio.
Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown WV has been entrusted with arrangements and online condolences may be made at www.hastingsfuneralhome.com.
