David Stone was a dedicated leader of the various sports leagues when he worked for BOPARC. He initiated sports camps as well as operated leagues for many various sports, and took personal pride in the proper administration of all of them. It was a pleasure to work with him as we improved the quality of life for Morgantown area citizens.

Janet and Family, Sorry I was unable to attend Davids funeral due to an eye appointment and injection and was not able to see well that day. Dave was an outstanding person and a good friend. He and I were always running into each other because of our sons playing basketball for MHS and MYBO basketball Club. I will miss seeing his infectious smile and generosity. He stood out among our many outstanding MHS Class of 1970 members.

Many fond memories of David. He was a very special gift to all those he coached and worked with to improve youth sport experiences.
When I reflect on David, the word respect comes to mind. The respect he gave others and the respect he gained by those he spent time.

Janet: So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. As you know, Dave and his family grew up in a house next to my grandmother on Pineview Drive. Dave, his siblings, and his mother all called her grandma. My grandma loved the entire Stone family. Although I haven't seen Dave in many years, I have found memories of working for him at the Rec Commission during my college years, the good times we had playing softball, and the postgame gatherings at Genes and Mundy's. May he rest in peace!

Dear Dave,
I came to the pines last year. I knew few but was that “ new guy”. Though I’d been there years before, as a child, you welcomed me. The word was, there was a men’s league. I signed up and I got the chance to meet people I probably wouldn’t. People I came to love, respect and enjoy their company. That was thanks to you. Through that I found my place at the Pines. Not only did I get to have moments I can’t replace (some I’d like to forget) but I got to have moments with you. I got to share stories of when my dad and you played together in the early 90s. More importantly, I got to spend some time with you. Wether it was a long conversation or a short hello, it was a highlight of my Thursday. I always enjoyed it and looked forward to it. Thursdays will never be or feel the same without you. I’ll miss seeing you pull up in your cart
and asking my group how we are playing(full disclosure, not good mostly). I’ll miss the conversations we had and how you went out of your way to welcome me. To always seek me out. To see how I was and just take an interest in how I was doing. I don’t know a lot but I know if there is a heaven, there’s a golf course just for you. I hope, if I get there, you’ll let me play it and I hope you’re in my foursome. . I’m gonna miss you my friend.
Much love
Nick Kelly

Morgantown will never be the same for me without Stoney's smile and his friendship there to greet me whenever I came to town. He was my Morgantown connection and he was someone I could completely rely upon. He made an indelible positive mark on my life in the past 15 years. Patadise was meant for you, Stoney.

Stoney….the Chestnut Ridge/Star City matchups were always a Grasshopper Tourney classic. I openly admit that Chestnut Ridge probably had the overall victory margin over the years. Had to be due to you and Russ’s outstanding coaching. In many ways, you shaped so many of our youthful lives by the man that you were. Love you Stoney…cheers and looking forward to telling Chestnut Ridge/Star City stories another day.

I’d say if there ever was a Gentle Giant of a man, it would have been Dave Stone. Dave gave me my first job as a teenager at BOPARC. First scorekeeper, referee, umpire, and League Director of grade school basketball leagues. He treated this poor boy like someone and as an adult, I never forgot him for it. I would bump into Dave several times a year, either at the Pines CC or at his usual hang out before every WVU basketball game at the Blue Gate. It never failed that he’d have a smile, a kind word, and just the friendliest hello. I can honestly say, I loved that man. My condolences to his entire family and his thousands of friends.
