Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donald Everett Smallwood, 92, of Morgantown, West Virginia passed away on Sunday, August 27 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV following a severe stroke. Donald was born on November 8, 1930, the son of the late James and Jesse Smallwood. He was a proud and loving husband and father to four children with seven grandchildren. He was a long-time member a Suncrest United Methodist Church. He supported the church through tithing and activities. Most specifically lending his acquired skills to repair projects around the church and also on numerous church sponsored mission trips helping restore homes in areas of country affected by natural disasters. He put those skills to work in constructing a home on the almost 20 acres of land, outside of Morgantown, on Halleck Rd, which provided for the family. He enjoyed maintaining it and doing it for himself over the 40 years residing at that location. He was fortunate to celebrate his 90th birthday there with family and friends. He was a proud and honorable retiree as a US Navy Master Chief, having served over 22 years from 1950 to 1972. He followed his military service by working at WVU in the physical plant performing and supervising maintenance for the Health Sciences Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital. He, along with wife Shirley (deceased 2019), would attend ship reunions around the country as part of their travels that took them to all 50 states including cruises to Alaska and Hawaii. He sadly missed Shirley over these past almost 4 years since her passing and would diligently visit her at their resting place where he will now be able to join and be with her again. Donald is survived by sons: Donald Smallwood Jr., Steven Smallwood, Jeffrey Smallwood and daughter Sandra Smallwood and her wife Meredith McCue; grandchildren Casey Smallwood, Callie Smallwood, Zachary Smallwood, Michael Smallwood, John Smallwood, and Stephanie Rico; sisters, Bonnie McCabe and Carol Forman, brothers Eddie Smallwood and Roy Smallwood. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by; his wife Shirley Smallwood, his grandson Wesley Smallwood, and brothers Denny Smallwood, James “Bud” Smallwood Jr., Larry Smallwood, Danny Smallwood, and sister Judy Bissett. Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, on Thursday, August 31, 2023 from 3 – 5 PM and 6 – 8 PM and again on Friday, September 1, 2023 at Suncrest United Methodist Church, 479 Van Voorhis Rd from 10 AM until time of the funeral service at 11 AM with Pastor Larry Buckland and Pastor Junius Lewis officiating.
