May the spirit of Dewey Hastings inspire us always. A radiant man, whose smile and affectionate embrace warmed countless hearts. His memory echoes every time we step into those familiar places that were integral to his life's journey - from simple lunches to banking halls, and at somber occasions held by the VFW 9916. Like a beacon, he guided his sons down their respective paths. I hope nobody will mind that this is not the usual memory. As a teenager I answered the phone one fine Sunday. Actually I answered it about 10 times. It was Dewey Smith Hastings and his son had wrecked the family car on his way home from a card game with my brother. After trying many times to get a hold of my father, he simply unloaded on me his feelings of disappointment. It was measured without a single cursing word but I knew how he felt by the end of this phone call. He was a gentleman even in distress and anger. I miss the site of he and his wife walking arm and arm weekly on their walk up High Street. They are the last Morgantown couple I know that did so and I shall miss that most of all.

Dewey was absolutely a class act. I first met him as a 10-12 year old and knew if I ever became I funeral director, I wanted to be just like him. He and Don Wills of the former Floyd Funeral Home in Weston were both tremendous role models in how a funeral director should look, act, and present himself. I continue to aspire to that level of professionalism and gentlemanliness each day, whether it be in the funeral home or on Main Street.
