Paul Morrow Smith, 90, of Morgantown, WV, peacefully passed away to be with his Lord and Savior on November 23, 2023, with his family by his side. He was born on October 19, 1933 in Sandy Hollow (New Bloomfield) in Perry County, PA to the late Frank and Mildred Harper Smith. In addition to his loving wife Mary Ellen of 63 years, he is survived by his children, Betsy Frownfelter and her husband Michael, David Smith and his fiancé Michelle Snyder, and Jeff Smith and his wife Lois; grandchildren, Ashley McFerren and her husband Caleb, Kelsey Wells and her husband Marty, Carder Smith, Katie Smith, Michael Frownfelter, Matthew Frownfelter, Kevin Smith, and Kyle Smith; great grandchildren, Annika and Lyla McFerren; sisters-in-law, Jean Smith, Barbara Smith, and Mary Snyder; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Tammy Smith and siblings, Harper Smith and Phillip Smith. Paul graduated from Hummelstown High School in 1951 where he played football with his twin brother Phil. He also played saxophone in the band and was active with the Boy Scouts. He graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor's degree in Dairy Science, and earned a Masters degree in Food Science from WVU. He served 3 years in the U.S. Army, primarily stationed in Panama, where he thoroughly enjoyed scuba diving and the local culture. In his professional career he was the Superintendent of the West Virginia University Dairy Plant, as well as Assistant Professor of Food Science and served as an Extension Specialist. Paul led the WVU Dairy Judging team, and enjoyed taking the team to compete across the U.S. Paul served in various roles with the West Virginia Dairy Products Association, including Chief Executive Officer. Along with spending time with his family, Paul especially enjoyed trout fishing at his beloved "Smoke Hole" WV, cherishing the time he spent there with his brothers, his cousin Ron and nephew Dale. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Morgantown for over 60 years. His faith in Christ brought him much comfort and strength throughout his life. He was very active in the Suncrest Kiwanis club for 53 years, including four terms as president, and was awarded the Kiwanis Legion of Honor award. He was committed to the creation and maintenance of Indian Park in Suncrest, and proudly served on the board of the Ronald McDonald House in Morgantown. Thank you to all who have been involved in his outstanding care over the past 3 years. Your dedication and compassion is very much appreciated. Friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St. Morgantown, on Thursday November 30th from 3-7 pm. Visitation will continue at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 309 Baldwin St. Morgantown, on Friday December 1st at 10:00am until the time of the funeral service at 11:00am, with Pastor Tony Setley officiating. Interment will be 12:00 pm Saturday, December 2nd at St John's Cemetery, 4605 E. Trindle Rd. Mechanicsburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Suncrest Kiwanis Club, or your preferred children's charity. Online condolences may be made at hastingsfuneralhome.com.
