Joe Sweeney, 92, of Morgantown, W passed on May 21, 2024 at Harmony at Morgantown. He was born April 29, 1932 in Folsom, WV, son of the late John C. and Amanda S. (Hoskinson) Sweeney. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Samuel (Mary), Frederick (Evelyn), Laura Jane (Sonny) Canzona, Donald, Jack, Bill (Hertha), Bernard, Warren (Patty), and Mary June. He is survived by his sister-in-laws; Alice, June and Barbara and many nieces and nephews (greats, great- greats, great-great-greats). Also very special friends; Claude & Ralphette Laudermilch, Margie Cunningham, Danelle Baker (and other First United Bank & Trust employees) and many friends in the Sabraton area. He was loved and will be missed by many friends and family. Joe was a Veteran of the Korean War, wounded in 1951, Honorably discharged from the Army in 1953 as a Sergeant First Class Regular Army and received a Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, and United States Service Medal. He belonged to the 19* and 24* Infantry Divisions. Even though Joe was wounded in Korea (lost most of his hearing) he never slowed down. He received his B. A. and M.S. in Geology at West Virginia University, studied Chemistry at Marietta College and A.A.S., Construction at New York Community College. He worked at Babcock & Wilcox, PPG Industries, WV Geologic and Economic Survey, W. G. Jaques Company and Gioffre Construction, Inc. He was a noted big game hunter in North America harvesting with well-known Gary Vince a record Stone Sheep, water skied, snow skied, cross-country skied, cross-country biked, cleaned cemeteries all over US and especially in WV for family and friends. He gave a helping hand to those in need and helped many family and friends. Family wishes to thank all those who cared for Pappy Joe at Harmony Comfort Care and Morgantown Amedysis Hospice; and the First United Bank and Trust employees who sometimes went out of their way to help. Blessings to them all. Per his wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial services. His wish was to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, being handled by Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown and online condolences may be made at www.hastingsfuneralhome.com.
