Obituary of Dale Varnell Staley II
Please share a memory of Dale to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On Sunday, June 30, 2024, Dale (Devy) Varnell Staley II, loving husband and father of two children passed away after a 5 year battle with cancer at the age of 63.
Dale was born on September 7, 1960 in Morgantown, WV to the parents of Dale and Neva Collett Staley. He attended Morgantown High School where he played drums in the MHS marching band. Dale attended West Virginia University and graduated from the Computer College in Pittsburgh, PA with a degree in computer technology. He worked for Mon General Hospital in Morgantown before moving to Charlotte, NC to work with First Data (McKesson) Corporation. On June 21, 1986, Dale married Sarah Thorn Staley. They had two daughters, Meghan Elizabeth and Makayla Noel who were Dale's pride and joy. He attended dance recitals, gymnastics competitions, hundreds of cheerleading competitions and Mount Pleasant High School football and basketball games where he watched them both cheer.
Dale never met a stranger and loved being around people. After retiring from McKesson, Dale worked at PNC Music Pavilion and for the Hornets Organization at the Spectrum Center. He enjoyed being with younger people and made lasting friends at both organizations. Dale always had a plan for his future. He started a lawn business which he and his wife kept up through the first 3 years of his illness. He started a rental business in Mount Pleasant and had a knack for fixing up apartments. Dale did not like sitting around. He was always tinkering around the house, at his lake house or working at his apartments. He was known for his quick wit, infectious smile and big heart for others.
Dale was active in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church as a Trustee and Youth Director for many years. He had fond memories going on trips with the youth group. He talked frequently about one trip to the Biltmore House where he was pulled over because the church van's registration had expired. Dale was a member of the Zoning Board of Mount Pleasant and participated in the Lions Club. Dale was a diehard West Virginia University football and basketball fan. He followed them on television when he no longer could attend games.
Dale was preceded in death by his father, Dale, mother, Neva and brother-in-law, David Friend. He is survived by his wife, Sarah, his two daughters, Meghan and Makayla, his sister Rita Staley Friend, his sister Tama Staley Southard, brother-in-law, Donald Southard, two nephew's Christopher and Justin Southard, two great nephews Caleb and Joshua Southard and numerous cousins.
