Obituary of James Robert Bates

James Robert Bates, 86, of Shinnston, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 17, 2025 at United Hospital Center after an extended battle with cancer. He will be missed by all. He was born September 21, 1938 in Gypsy, WV, a son of the late Robert "Bob" Lloyd and Trenna Marie (Steele) Bates. Jim grew up in Owings, WV and attended Shinnston High School. After high school, he served his country in the United State Air Force. He returned home and became an electrical lineman by trade, working for Mon Power out of the Shinnston office in the late 1960's. He continued doing line work for the I.B.E.W., travelling around the country for work. He is survived by his two sons, Scott A. Bates of Fairmont and Brian D. Bates and his wife Sally of Fairmont; one granddaughter, Carrie Bates Onan and her husband John Casey Onan of Centerburg, OH; two great grandchildren, Mackynzie Elizabeth Marie Onan and Jonathan James Scott Onan; one sister, Carol Sue Lowther of Owings; two nephews, Steve Hall and Mike Hall of Owings; one niece, Melissa Hoops and her husband J.R. Hoops of Shinnston; two stepsons, Mike Snyder of Michigan and Jerry Snyder of Pennsylvania; and one stepdaughter, Melissa Crawford of Ohio. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Bates; son, Kevin Neil Bates; stepson, Rick Snyder; and nephew, Jeff Hall Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with cremation arrangements and there will be no public services.
