Grace Elizabeth Baker Roberts Chittum, 91, of Morgantown, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Sundale Nursing Home of Morgantown, WV. Grace was born in Gary, IN on November 29, 1923, the daughter of the late Thomas Wesley Baker and Katie (Kennedy) Baker. She was raised on a farm that had been in her family since at least 1847. She and her first husband, Darius, built their homestead outside Sabraton. She lived with her second husband, Monk, on Riverview Drive. She completed her undergraduate and master degrees from West Virginia University. She taught elementary school for three decades locally including in Hagans, Albright, Arthurdale, and Gladesville. She worked at several places throughout the Morgantown area, and worked at Sterling Faucet making munitions during World War II. Over her life she repaired and drove race cars, farmed, weaved, and was a seamstress. She loved horseback riding and to travel the world. She lived in Italy for a year after World War II. For the Rock Forge Neighborhood House she twice drove a church youth bus on a summer tour of New England and to Canada to the World’s Fair in Montreal. After retirement she researched and performed in historical reenactments. She was socially active in the Eastern Star, Rebecca, Farm Woman’s Club, and Monongalia County Senior Center. She was a member of Rock Forge Presbyterian Church. She is survived by three sons, Robert Roberts and his wife Anne of Falls Church, VA, Thomas Roberts and his wife Susan of Morgantown, Richard Roberts and his wife Denise of Albright, WV; grandchildren, Myles Roberts and his partner, Tracy Peoples of Washington, DC, Darius Roberts and his partner Lauren Rosenblatt of Las Vegas, NV, Mark Roberts and his wife Alissa of Seattle, WA, Elizabeth Cowan and her husband Blair of Denver, CO, Christine Randolph and her husband Greg of Manchester, NH, and Melissa Roberts of Greenville, SC; great grandchildren, Eliana and Declan Roberts, both of Seattle, WA; and sisters, Marian Hinkle of Denver, CO, and Barbara Yochum and her husband Robert of Castle Rock, CO. She survived several husbands: Darius Roberts and Monk Chittum. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by siblings, Carl Baker, Wayne Baker, Don Baker, and Evelyn Foster. Friends and family are invited to attend her memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22nd at Rock Forge Presbyterian Church.
