We deeply mourn the passing of Dr. Leon Saul Puller, 90, of The Village at Heritage Point, Morgantown, WV, previously of Linden, NJ, on May 15, 2012 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 7, 1922 in New York City, the second child of Abraham and Anna Puller. He attended New York University for three years before serving in the US Army from 1943 to 1945. Then he earned his BS in Medicine and, in 1947, his MD from Creighton University School of Medicine. He completed a medical internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, NJ, and medical residencies at Sea View Hospital, Harlem Hospital, and The Fort Hamilton VA Hospital, all in New York City. He returned to active military duty in the US Air Force from 1952 to 1954, attaining the rank of Captain. In 1950, Leon married Sybil Holland and started private practice of internal medicine in Linden. A tremendously hardworking, driven, and dedicated physician, he was respected and admired by his fellow doctors, by the nurses in his office, who felt like part of his family, and by the community. And he was loved by his loyal patients, making house calls to them for many years as well as caring for them in his office and at the three hospitals where he worked. His medical career spanned fifty years.Leon was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather whose marvelous wit, honesty, kindness, and generosity will be fondly remembered. He delighted in comedy and was renowned for his jokes and family stories. He and his wife Sybil loved classical music and were enthusiastic patrons of the Metropolitan Opera. In the summer, they enjoyed traveling abroad with their dear cousins. He is remembered by all as a sweet man and a real gentleman. He was preceded in death by his parents brother, Dr. Herbert I. Puller sister-in-law, Minnie Puller and cherished wife of 54 years, Sybil Holland Puller. He is survived and dearly missed by his daughter, Dr. Elissa J. Hoffman son-in-law, Dr. Werner S. Pluhar former son-in-law, Dr. Donald L. Hoffman and grandchildren, Yonina A. Hoffman and Jarrett A. Hoffman. The funeral will be at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin, NJ, Sunday, June 10, 11 a.m., and a celebration of Leonâs life will be held at the Village at Heritage Point, Morgantown, WV, Saturday, June 23, 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Neuromuscular Disease Foundation, www.ndf-hibm.org.
