Arlene Vanettia (Duff) Lay, 94, of Morgantown passed away on Friday, May 11, 2012, at Sundale Nursing Home. She was born December 26, 1917, at Irona, Preston County. She was the daughter of the late John F. and Bessie Rechtine Duff. She attended school in Preston County and graduated from Masontown High School in 1936. Her family was one of the original homesteaders in the Arthurdale Development Project created by Eleanor Roosevelt. During World War II she worked at Sillmanâs Plant at Arthurdale. For 23 years she worked as a cashier at Thorofare Market #1136 until she retired in February of 1979. In the 1940âs and 50âs she was a member of the Shack Presbyterian Church, where she served as assistant Sunday School Superintendent. She was also a Brownie Scout Leader for three years. She has been a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church for over 30 years, where she served as a youth Sunday School teacher. Arlene, her husband and family, were avid campers at Sand Springs and Glade Farms.She is survived by three sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Lay, who passed away in 1987, her sister, Leona Tennant and four brothers Harlan Brent Duff, Charles Dover Duff, Lester and Oscar Duff also preceded her in death. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Sundale Nursing Home staff and Morgantown Hospice for their compassionate care to Arlene. Family and friends will be received at the Chapel of Tranquility Mausoleum in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Westover on Monday, May 14, from 2pm until the time of the committal service at 2:30pm with Pastor Douglas Miller Hastings Funeral Home of Morgantown is in charge of the arrangements.
