Pam,We are so sorry to hear of Larry's passing. We didn't know until today and will be unable to attend the visitation or funeral. One thing we do know is that Mom, Dad and Larry are all together now free of pain and sorrows. Can you imagine how ecstatic Dad was when he was reunited with his coffee/story buddy. The halls in Heaven are reverberating with the sounds. And just think, Larry was probably speechless when Dad had a chance to introduce him to some of his war buddies. Take care Pam. We are so blessed to have known Larry and you. I'll get in touch with you later and have lunch and go shopping.Much love and prayers,Claudia and Nickie

It is with heavy heart and my deepest condolences that I wish to express my sympathy for your loss. Larry was a great friend and mentor to not only me but to so many in the history profession. I will never forget his kindness and support while I researched and interviewed him for my film on the history of the CCC in West Virginia back in 2006. We both had mutual admiration for the "Boys in Green" and loved to talk with him about CCC research or our finds on Ebay. We were friends for many years beginning with my Grad class in archival management in which he was my professor. We hit it right off and always found time for each other. Most recently Larry helped me through a rough time after I developed a viral infection and could not move my legs or walk. While I was in rehab and in the hospital Larry found the time to visit with me and keep my mind occupied. His friendship helped ease my fears and allow me to focus on my recovery. I wish I could have been able to help him in the same manner. I will always be thankful for calling him my friend and as a fellow CCC historian I will always keep his enthusiasm for the CCC alive in my talks to others and future projects. We are all so lucky to have been in the presence of this kindred soul. God's speed my friend. We'll see you again.

Hi Pam, I was saddened to read of Larry's death. I will always remember that Larry and you sat behind Sandy and me, at Mountaineer Field, and we shared many games together. I also will always remember Larry's intensity at most games. We could always count on Larry to shout encouragement to our team and discouragement to our opponent (in Larry's unique manner). Yes, he was a unique character, and we liked him, too.I have found that the pain you feel now, from Larry's death, will never go away, but it will recede as time passes. The passage of time does help us heal. I also found the MGH Survivors Group meetings, of Morgantown Hospice, to be personally helpful to me after Sandy's death. The Group invites community members who have lost a loved one to join their bereavement support group, which meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at The Village at Heritage Point. Call 285-2777 for more information. It's a free service.Take care, Pam.Bill

Inspiring to say the very least, Larry never ceased to amaze me in his commitment to his family and friends, community, church, beloved University, and scholarly pursuits. Larry took such an active interest in my research for my master's thesis and his aid through the entire process proved to be as invaluable as his friendly smile and contagious laugh. As he tirelessly searched the internet for rare collectibles, he felt it his duty to track down an authentic piece of company scrip from the town of Edna Gas (the focus of my research). He was adamant that I have it. Following my thesis defense, he was so disappointed to report that he was unable to locate one, but that he "wouldn't give up."Two years later, I received an envelope from Larry and inside was the Edna Gas Coal Company scrip. I will always treasure that tiny coin and the great joy that it brought both Larry and I. I hope that we can all pay tribute to Larry by loving and serving others.

My condolences go to Larry's family. I shared an office with Larry at the Bicentennial House the past few years (before they made us move!)I always enjoyed the conversations, wisdom, and positive attitude that was always present in Larry's office. And the occassional Hershey kiss! I found myself in that office many times, to either talk to the man himself, or borrow something from his extensive library. It's hard to believe that just last year, Larry sat on my thesis committee. He was such an invaluable source of CCC knowledge, and I appreciated that he still managed to read my work even when he was sick. I always respected Larry's passion for history, the CCC, WVU and the state, and his students. I hope that I can carry forward this kind of passion.

I don't think there has ever been a person quite as influential in my life as Larry. He was a teacher in many ways rather than just in the classroom. I will always cherish the time I spent talking with him in his office or outside on a nice day, reminiscing on the past and how things have changed. I could never say thank you enough to him, but I hope he knows where he is now, that he has changed me into a better person who is connected with the world around her. My heart goes out to Pam and his family, he loved you more than you could imagine. May he always be remembered with love, and with the laughter that was ever so genuine. My warmest wishes to Larry's family and loved ones. When I took up near permanent residence in the WV Collection in the 1990s, running into Larry was always an encounter with an interested and supportive friend. I can still see Larry practically jumping around when describing something exciting he had uncovered. Something tells me that those fortunate enough to be reunited with Larry in Heaven will be greeted with that same bouncing, loving enthusiam.See you in the funny papers dear dear friend.

I met Larry in the 1970s. I owned an antiques shop downtown Morgantown. Larry frequented my shop and we became friends. I entered the WVU Public History degree program, and realized that Larry would be a natural in the field. I remember leaving a packet of Public History info in his business mailbox. I put a note on the info packet that said, "Larry, you would be a natural in this program" ----and he was. Larry Sypolt: a good man
