Please share a memory of Herschel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Herschel R. Travis, Sr., 88, of Morgantown, passed away Friday, January 27, 2012, at the Madison Nursing and Rehab Center.Herschel was born in Morgantown on February 6, 1923, the son of the late Liberty Glenn Travis and Zinia Mayme Nuce Travis.Herschel delivered newspapers while he was going to high school. If people didn't have the nickel to pay him, he paid for their papers out of his money. After high school he worked for Morgantown Ordinance and Sterling Faucet before working for Consol as an electrician and retired after 21 years. He was also a member of Local Union UMWA 4043, Osage Mines. He enjoyed bowling, card playing (especially spades.) He was a real jokester & many fun times were had at Little Falls Boat Club. One of the most memorable was when he remarried good friends, Fred & Hester Hall. He was quite the carpenter & built his own house which he lived in all of his life. He was quite proud of that accomplishment. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Victoria L. Travis of South Carolina, his twin grandsons, Richard & Robert Travis also of South Carolina brother, Kenneth Eugene Travis of Florida, & several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Jane Arbogast Travis in 2007, sons, Charles McNeill Travis in 1953 And Herschel R. Travis, Jr. February 12, 2008, grandson, Sean McNeill Travis in 2004 & his brother Walter Donald Travis in 1991.At this time, surely he would like to thank all of his wonderful friends & family who lived & shared their lives with him. He was very blessed to have so many who cared for him in sickness & health. Before he entered into his new life he told a very special person in his life that he would miss her & asked if she would put a flower on Janeâs grave for him. She needed them, ""He said"" and he was fine without them. Hopefully, we all take a lesson on how important one little flower can be & we too will have a garden of love.Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street Morgantown, on Sunday February 12, from 2:00p.m until the time of the funeral service at 4:00p.m with Rev. Dan Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
