Obituary of Edward Mononhan JR

Edward Joseph Monahan, Jr., 97, of Heritage Point, Morgantown, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Sundale Nursing Home.Ed was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 27, 1913, a son of the late Edward Joseph Monahan, Sr. and Nellie Thompson Monahan.Ed graduated with a BS in 1935 from St. Thomas College, St Paul, MN and post graduate work, University of Minnesota. He spent 30 years film-making at the University of Minnesota, most notably for Dr. C. Walton Lillehei, a leader in open heart surgery, and for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Retiring to Longville, MN in 1983, Ed spent 8 years as Township Supervisor. He moved to Morgantown, WV in 2001.Hobbies included playing the piano, reading, working crossword puzzles, and attending operas. Ed compiled family genealogies for the Monahan, Winther, and Thompson families, among others. He is survived by his children, Nora M. and husband Bill (William) L. MacDonald of Morgantown, Edward Joseph Monahan III and wife Saundra of Fort Myer, FL, and Mary K. Monahan of Annapolis, MD grandchildren, Heather Parker and husband Peter of East Meadow, NY, Shannon Geiman and husband Jeff of Glenville, PA great-grandchildren, Dakota, Sam and Riley Parker, Brock and Taylor Geiman sister-in-law Pat Monahan of Burnsville, MN nieces Kathleen Westlin, of Minneapolis, MN and Janet Cummings of Mendota Heights, MN.In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Helen Winther, second wife Margaret Barry, brother William Monahan and his special friend Phyllis Popovich.At the family request, cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home.A Memorial Service will be held at Heritage Point, on Wednesday, May 25 at 6:30 p.m. with Mark Double officiating.
