Obituary of Clifford A. Harvey

Please share a memory of Clifford to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Clifford A. Harvey, Professor Emeritus of Art at West Virginia University and founder of the Graphic Design program at the University's Division of Art, passed away Monday morning, September 16, 2013 at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born in St. Paul, MN on September 28, 1937, a son of the late Clifford Harvey and the late Truen (King) Harvey. Cliff holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He established the Graphic Design program at West Virginia University in 1973 and led the program for three decades, setting up a modern graphic design studio utilizing state of the art computers at the Creative Arts Center in the mid 1980s. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2007. Cliff established standards which have laid the ground work for hundreds of graphic design students in the profession. Even after the program began using computers, Cliff continued to teach students in the art of fine printing and the book arts because he felt it was important for students not to lose touch with their heritage and sense of craft. Cliff is nationally known for his work with the GramLee Collection of Early American Commercial Wood Engravings, one of the largest single collections of 19th century American wood engravings known in the United States today. The collection is owned by the WVU Division of Art. After printing and researching the engravings, Cliff completed a private press book about the GramLee Collection titled Before Rosebud was a Sled, which is in rare book collections in many universities and numerous private collections. He has also lectured across the United States and internationally. In 2002, Cliff set up an exchange program in graphic design with the Universdad de Guanajuato in Mexico. Cliff had a passion for dogs, both in the show ring and as personal companions. Cliff was instrumental in the development of two dog parks in Morgantown, WV, Stanley's Spot and Krepps Dog Park. He and his wife, Carol, established Dog Tags Training School in 1994 which still is in business today. Cliff is survived by his loving wife, Carol and three daughters, Terry (Terrance) Demarest of Nashville, TN, Tracy (Jeff) Webster of Jacksonville, FL and Lisa (Robert) Garcia of Half Moon Bay, CA. Cliff had 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Cliff also leaves behind his beloved Niki and Georgi, Cliff and Carol's German Shorthaired Pointers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Audrey Omdahl. In honoring Cliff's wishes, he will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Cliff's memory may be made to either the Morris Animal Foundation, 10200 East Girard Ave, Suite B430 Denver, CO 80231, Phone 800.243.2345, www.morrisanimalfoundation.org; or to PACCT, Inc (Patient Advocates for Advanced Cancer Treatments, Inc.) 1143 Parmelee NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504, Phone 616 453-1477, www.paactusa.org.
