As an alum of WVU, class of 1979, I took several of Dr. Guthrie's classes and to this day use what he taught me to identify plants from many areas of the United States. I currently live in Miami, Florida but still remember the trees and plants that grow in Morgantown and vicinity. It was truly a pleasure knowing him and learning from him!

Roland and I met in the 7th grade at Cammack Jr. High School. He'd hit me and run away laughing. I never could catch him. Our first camping trip we used an old shower curtain for a tent. We just pegged the 4 corners and it was totally flat. It rained heavily that night and the weight of the water collapsed the "tent" on us and we got soaked! The only time we ever fussed, I got mad at him because he said his army could beat my army and he got mad at me because I said my army could beat his. However, when we realized that neither of us had an army, we declared the war was over. We never fussed again! We would pick blackberries and bring back buckets of them for our moms to make into jelly. He would get poison ivy, but no mosquito bites. I would be eaten alive by mosquitos, but no poison ivy. He would joke that he should become a botanst and I should become a zoologist. He became a renown scientist. I became an insurance salesman. I am so proud to say that Roland was my oldest and my best friend!!! Roland, old friend, REST IN PEACE!!!

Dear Dr. Guthrie's Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Guthrie was such a fine man and an example of the very best his generation offered to the world. His accomplishments were many, but none so valuable as the the students who learned in his classes, not only about the natural world, but about life. I was one of those students and I will never forget Dr. Guthrie as long as there are high mountain deserts, prairies, plains, tundra, with their flora that make me recall one of Dr. Guthrie's lectures and slides in Plant Geography class. He was one of the best professors I had. May your sorrow be lessened by the song of a spring Robin, the sweet smell of the wild Honeysuckle, the flaming colors of the fall Maples, and the soft chortle of the Blue Birds in winter, as I am certain that these were a few of Dr. Guthrie's favorite things. With Great Sympathy, Twila S. Metheney

Madge, I was sorry to see Roland’s passing in the newspaper yesterday. Over the many years when you were working at WVJC I enjoyed discussions with him in his area of expertise and always appreciated his pleasant mannerisms. After the lifetime that you and Roland have spent together, I’m sure this is a very difficult time for you. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. I don’t always follow the obituaries but if I catch the notice for the memorial service, I will certainly be there. God bless you and your family.

In the 70s and 80 when I became interested in botany Roland was always helpful and encouraging. He always had time to chat with me about trees and such. I enjoyed a game of horse shoes with him on more than one occasion during the Biology Dept picnics at TABS. I remember those times fondly.
