I just found out Ruth was dead by reading "in memorium" in the most recent HSC newsletter. I don't know when the shock will fade. Ruth taught my intro to public health course, and I had the privilege of traveling with her to Honduras in the fall of 2008.
She was much better at being alive than most anyone I have ever known. West Virginia owes her a great debt and the world is a darker place without her.
My sincere condolences to her family and many friends.

I was so upset to learn about Ruth's passing and was unaware of this until today, when I received an e-mail notifying me of a dedication in memory of Dr. Ruth Kershner, from the WVU School of Public Health.
She was one of my instructors at WVU, class of 1997, and she was fun and full of life and a wonderful teacher. I learned so much from her and her students loved her. She was an advocate for Domestic Violence victims and was instrumental in teaching others about it.
She will be missed by all who knew her.I will never forget her.

I am so hurt with this news today. I saw Dr. Ruth briefly last fall 2013 at the US post office downtown Morgantown and we spoke briefly and she asked me what my next plans was since I could not return to the PHD program as I planned. She gave me a hug and told me not to give up because its never late to replan and make a comeback. If I had the slightest clue that was the last hug I would receive from this great lady I bet I would do all I could to petition the heavens for more time with Dr Ruth. It is really painful to see her go but God has the best answer. I pray that God will grant her family the fortitude to bear this great loss. May her soul rest in perfect peace....Amen

I am greatly saddened to learn of Ruth's passing. I am a former student, and last saw her in 2006. I also went on to teach at the collegiate level, and still use notes that I took in her class almost 20 years ago! I have exceptionally fond memories of her, and always will. The last time we saw each other, we were out to dinner and she ordered champagne....I will cherish that. Condolences to the entire family in this hard time.

Dear Family of Dr. Ruth Kershner, I was so sorry to see that she had passed away unexpectedly .She taught me health in college more then 10 years ago. She is a someone that I will never forget. She was soft but tough to. She expected us to be in class but she was our friend . She listened and made you feel comfortable to talk to. I remember doing a project for her class. I created the 10,000 dollar pyramid using health questions. It was a success. I also remember her telling us a story about a friend of hers that passed away and this friend had many friends around her when she passed away and it was a beautiful experience. And one more memory I have of Ruth. She made us laugh by telling us that a person can have an heart attack from using the bathroom. She was also always available if I needed her. She sure made a lasting impression on me. For I remember specific things she said or did. She mentioned her son and husband often.
My condolences to your family. Barb Gorda
I hope you find some comfort from my memories of Ruth, for my dad passed away 8 months ago and I enjoyed reading the many condolences with his online obituary through Hastings.

Dear Cork & Family
I am so very sorry for your loss. I went to High School with Ruth. We also spent one summer at Ocean City MD together working at the same restaurant & staying at the same boarding house. She mothered all the waitresses there & made darn sure we took care of ourselves. Not so many nights out late !!! She was kind.
What a beautiful woman she turned out to be. She accomplished much in her life, family & career. I know you all must be proud of her. I certainly am. I am sorry we lost touch when the 1970's came around.

Family and friends of Ruth,
As an online graduate student, I never actually met Ruth in person but we communicated often over the past two years. She was the first person I spoke to when I called West Virginia and she guided me through a Master’s degree. It was also apparent I was dealing with a special person. She was smart, witty, industrious and above all non-pretentious. I called her at home from time to time and I always felt bad because I knew how busy she was. She was always gracious and made me laugh. I enjoyed those conversations- I will always remember them. She truly was an excellent teacher. Recently, I emailed her to check on my status for graduation. She wrote back that I was good to go and she was so proud! I truly believed she was. I shouldn’t have waited to thank her for everything but I think she already knew how grateful I was. I consider myself very lucky to have had my graduate experience with Ruth. She was very special.

I will Never forget Ruth. We worked in home health together for many years. One of my main memories of Ruth is the year she, Cork and Cody took off to travel the country. I remember she said waiting till our sixties (for retirement) to travel didn't make sense since there was no guarantee we would live to see retirement.
I am deeply saddened that her life here has ended; she meant so much to so many. In years past as well as now. I don't know what lies ahead of us after death; but I am sure that Ruth's energy and sarcastic wit has not ended; but rather, has transitioned to whatever we transition to.
My thoughts are with you all.

Dear family and friends of Ruth Whiteley Kershner,
Please accept my sympathy in the sudden loss of one so dear to so many. I graduated from NHHS with Ruth, I regret not knowing most of her family. I extend sympathy to her husband, her sons and their wives, and to all of her grandchildren who will miss her terribly. Also, to her sisters and her dear dad..Her sister Laurie was a friend of my brother Doug as well as my whole family. I remember Carrie as a toddler. I saw Ruth last at our 45th high school reunion ; she was full of life, healthy and always glad to reconnect with classmates. We are a close class. Her service to others through the health field is incredible. She made a difference in the lives of so many. She would want us to live each day as if it were a gift. With the fondest of memories of my friend and classmate,
Jan O'Brien Young

Laurie, Carrie, and family:
I am so shocked and saddened by Ruth's sudden passing. She will always be remembered as a bubbly, vivacious, intelligent, beautiful woman. Her gifts to all of us were so numerous: caring, loving, compassionate, and passionate about her nursing career. entertaining to any and all of us. Her many gifts to all of us who knew her can never be counted. She will always be remembered as one of the most alive, dynamic, "full of life" people I have ever known. She could walk into a room full of people and have us all laughing in no time. Ruth will be sorely missed by all of her friends and family. It was a privilege and honor to have known her.
Most sincere condolences,
Kirk Grooms
1967 classmate.
