Wilbur T. Simon, 89, of Morgantown passed away Monday, July 14, 2014, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
The son of the late Otto and Dovie Phillips Simon, he was born May 4, 1925, in Philippi, WV.
He graduated from Philippi High School in 1943. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy V12 Program, University of Richmond, Princeton University and the US Naval Reserve Midshipman's School at Northwestern University where he was commissioned as an ensign. He was stationed in San Francisco on
LST and LSM ships until August 1946. He graduated from WVU in 1950 with a BS in Mining Engineering. He worked for Consolidation Coal Company for 33 years and retired as the Northern Region Safety Director.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Wotring) Simon whom he married on January 21, 1949, two daughters, Shelley Simon of Richmond, VA, and Sherry (Simon) Kauff (Stephen), of Advance, NC, and one son, Stephen Simon (Teresa) of Fredericksburg, VA, three grandchildren, Kelley Kauff-Ortiz (Jose), Kasey Kauff (Amanda), and Tyler Kauff, two great-grandchildren, Eliana and Luke Ortiz, all of Orlando, FL. He is also survived by a niece, Sandra Simon Faulkner (William), and a nephew, Philip Simon (Susan), of Pittsburgh, PA, also, survived by two step-grandchildren, Michelle and Nicholas, and four step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth, and sister-in-law, Jeanne.
Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, on Friday, July 18th from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Richard Hepler officiating. Interment will be held at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton, Friday at 2:00 p.m. with Full Military Honors accorded.
