To the family of Jamie Shumway.
While I can in no way know your bereavement, I am saddened to learn of Jamie's death. We were close friends at UOP and lost touch soon after graduation. In reading his obituary, while his life was sadly shortened, clearly he had achieved everything I had known him to dream of and be passionate about in our early 20's having great success in academics and more important, in family.
Jamie taught me to backpack and now, standing on the downside of the mountain, there is some comfort in knowing he brought so many others into the woods as well. May his legacy be your comfort along with these words from an old friend.
With sincere condolences,
John Byrne

Betsy and Wesley, We extend our deepest sympathy to you at this most difficult time. Jamie was a real trooper and never met a challenge that he wouldn't take on. I enjoyed the many years of interacting with him at the WVU Health Sciences. He always had a smile for everyone, no matter how stressful the day. May God surround you with comfort and peace.

Dear Betsy and Wesley,
Jamie was such a help and inspiration to me when I joined WVUSOM in 1998. His boundless enthusiasm for tackling challenges, his effervescent friendliness, his unfailing encouragement, his dedication to the preservation of West Virginia's beautiful rivers and wildnerness, his energy for academic pursuits... all that and more enlivened my experience at WVU. I will never forget my first foray into central West Virginia, at the height of fall in 1998, when Jamie took me to a meeting of environmentalists in Elkins. The overwhelming beauty of a fall day in rural West Virginia was exceeded only by Jamie's excitement about showing it off to me. He was a wonderful friend. He spoke always of his family with such love and warmth, and he treated his friends as though he were members of an extended family. I wish you comfort in knowing that you did everything you possibly could to ease his passing from the and that love transcends the boundaries of life and death.

We are sorry to hear of Jamie's passing, and it was our pleasure to know him. As two families, we had such interesting connections and coincidences. You and Jamie were some of the first people we met when we moved to Morgantown, 24-1/2 years ago, at the reception for new faculty.
May your memories and love of Jamie sustain you at this time.
