So sorry to have just heard of Ginger's passing. I worked with her long ago in the Cedar Rapids Symphony. She was such a fine musician and a good friend. Just today, I was wondering what she was up to now and found out this news. I have nothing but wonderful memories. She left us much too soon.

So sorry to learn of Virginia's passing. I considered her a good friend and fine musician from the time we worked together in the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra in Mexico. The last time we saw each other and chatted was when the university hosted the International Double Reed Society convention a number of years back, and she kindly loaned me her studio to try out some instruments and also store my samoyed dog in his crate while attending the convention. We had a good laugh. My deepest condolences to you all.

My condolences to your family. My son Chase is currently a horn player and has studied under Dr. Thompson for the past 2 1/2 years at WVU. When searching for colleges, his HS band director told him that he has to connect with the horn professor and when he does he will know it. WVU was actually his last college choice until he met Dr. Thompson. He connected with her, adored her and will forever have an impact on his life. She will be missed by so many. God bless!

Words cannot express the positive influence of Dr. Thompson's teaching and guidance on my life and career. Not only was she an elite musician and an effective, patient teacher - she was a compassionate and kindhearted human being. Although it has been a few years since I last spoke with her, I am nonetheless heart broken. My thoughts and prayers are with Paul Scea and the countless people she has touched through her teaching and musicianship.

Virginia was a true mentor and friend to me-- to this day I strive to model her collegiality and professionalism in my work. And she showed such kindness to me as a young professor who was really out of his element…I owe many thanks to Viriginia.
My thoughts are with you, Paul--

I was so grieved to hear of Virginia Thompson's death. My deepest condolences to Paul Scea.
She was an amazing musician and superb teacher. Her interest in new music (and in mine in particular) led me to write a piece for eight horns for her studio and a woodwind quintet for the Laureate Quintet.
I will always be grateful for that and for her friendship.
I will miss her, but my memories of her will be as luminous as her playing.

I would like to express my sympathies to Dr. Thompson's family, friends and loved ones. Dr. Thompson was Director of Graduate Studies while I pursued my doctoral degree in the late 1990s, and she was a tremendous help to me as I navigated that process. What I remember most is her smile and her cheerful demeanor. She always made me feel at home, and she was absolutely on top of her game as an academic advisor as well as a musician. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to know her.

I am truly shocked and saddened by this terrible news. Virginia was not only my colleague at WVU and faculty mentor, she was my friend. We performed together, laughed together, and cried together. Even though we ended up living far from one another, we could always pick up the phone or see one another and pick right up where we left off. I will always cherish her advice, her encouragement, and her smile. Rest easy, dear friend, and know that you are loved.

Dr. Thompson affected my life in more ways than I can possible imagine. Her humor, laugh, and inspiring lessons affect my teaching daily. She provided me opportunities to work with her students and ensembles, and for that I will be forever grateful. Thank you Dr. Thompson for everything you've done for me, you will be missed, and never forgotten.

Dr. Thompson was inspiring. She touched so many of us in very tangible ways. I am using many of her concepts 25 years later with my Soldiers in the Army Music Program. She was vital to my development as a musician and helped me learn to engage the audiences. I will always remember when she gave a performance master class during a convocation class during her first year at WVU. I was a freshman and it influenced my thinking from that point forward. She walked out and illustrated everything wrong about how many musicians and students approach perfromance and it was comedic genius. The distractions she created( Everything from the toliet roll on shoe as she walked in, leaving music backstage, posture, stopping in the middle of the music while making random mistakes, and emptying spit valves) engaged us as students so that when she redid the performance as a pro, we understood clearly what the standard was. My condelences to Paul, friends, family, and all of us who consider her special.

So much love I send to Paul Scea in this time of need. Dr. Thompson was unbelievably passionate - and it poured out of her and spread like wildfire throughout WVU's Creative Arts Center. And now that you're gone, so many will step up to share the love with others.

We know that you are now in the arms of angels who gently carried your soul to heaven. We know that God has called you Home to be in heaven with Him.
We didn't know it was going to be so soon. We didn't know you would leave us at the age of 59 years young. For that we are shocked and deeply saddened. Our faith teaches us to trust that only God knows when you work on earth is done.
Dr. Virginia Thompson, a patient mentor, amazing teacher, gifted Horn player, brilliant thinker, and a truly incredible person Your influence, teaching and guidance reached so many and will continue to do so much like the rippling effect of a stone when thrown into a pond.
Sadly missed and dearly loved. Sending prayers to your husband Paul and to the surviving family and relatives.

Dr. Thompson was an amazing mentor to her students in particular my granddaughter, Alyson. Each time I spoke with Dr. Thompson she was very upbeat and confident about my granddaughters music performances and abilities. She will never be forgotten and missed by those whose life she touched especially Alyson.
