Mary Miller, 82, of Morgantown, passed away, peacefully, Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was surrounded by her family singing, “It Is Well with My Soul”, when she took her last breath. Mary was born in Cowen, WV on January 7, 1933, the daughter of the late Garrett Myers and the late Ella (Christian) Myers. Mary married her high school sweetheart, Fred Hunter Miller, Sr., also of Cowen, on June 1.1952. Together they shared 63 amazing years of marriage, prior to Fred passing in June, 2015. They raised six children together. They were involved in many clubs and organizations. In their spare time they enjoyed bowling. They were members of the Friday morning Senior League at Suburban Lanes and Mary was active on the Wednesday morning Early Risers League. As Area Coordinators for the Youth for Understanding student exchange program, Mary and Fred opened their home to nine foreign exchange students from Holland, Spain, Japan, Sweden, and Germany. Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church. As an active member of the community, she always stayed involved being a member of American Baptist Women, Mountaineer Women’s Club, and Barbra-Renner Circle. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and Boy Scout Den Mother, was a member of Eastern Star, played an active role as a McDonald’s party liaison, as well as being the proprietor of Mary’s Place Bed & Breakfast in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She was a professor of the Hillbilly Language, for all who wanted to learn. Upon Fred’s retirement as the President of Operations of NACCO, being huge WVU Mountaineer fans and having most of their family in the area, Fred and Mary retired to Morgantown to be near their family and their WVU Mountaineers. She is survived by her children: Anna Maria Shumaker and husband Todd, Fred Hunter Miller, Jr. and companion Randy Ramage, Elizabeth Fred Miller, Jr., Rebecca Ella Tucker and husband Moose, Sarah Kathryn Rose and husband Brian; grandchildren; Kara Miller McElree, Ryan Jerico, Jessica Marie Miller, Cameron Tucker, Samantha Shumaker, Brady Tucker, Kyle Tucker, Lucas Shumaker, Elizabeth Miller, Darren Rose and Logan Rose: great-grandchildren, Tyler Jerico, Zoey Wright and Mila Wright; brothers, Paul Myers and Parker Myers; sisters, Ruth Casto and Jean Butcher. Rico Jalink of Holland and eight other exchange students and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Fred Hunter Miller, Sr.; sons, Daniel Burton and David Michael Miller; brothers, Owen Myers and Bill Myers; sisters, Ruby Stine and June Wyatt. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, on Saturday, October 24th from 6-9p.m. Visitation will continue on Sunday, October 25th from 1:00p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3:00p.m.with Pastor Matt Murray officiating. In keeping with Mrs. Miller’s wishes, cremation service will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Fred and Mary Miller to Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, Dept. of Mining Engineering, c/o WVU Foundation, P.O. box 1650, Morgantown, WV 26507-1650.
