Obituary of Stephen A. Fedan

Please share a memory of Stephen A. to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Stephen (Steve) A. Fedan, 94, left his family and friends to be with our Lord on Saturday, December 5, 2015. The pride of his life was his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who he passionately adored. Steve was the son of Anthony and Rosalia (Oleskow) Fedan, both farm children born in the same village in Galicia, Austria, and was born on 17th Street in New York City in 1921. He spent his childhood in Manhattan, and was a product of the Great Depression. A significant experience of his childhood was attendance at Lake Delaware Boys’ Camp in Delhi, NY, where young boys were able to avoid polio. Steve graduated from Stuyvesant High School. When World War II broke out he enlisted in the Navy and became an Ensign and earned his wings. He was a navigator on submarine-chasing blimps and was stationed in several places for service on both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. After World War II he received an honorable discharge, and served for twenty-two years in the Navy Reserve. Following discharge from active duty he enrolled in and graduated from City College of New York with a degree in Civil Engineering. He worked as an engineer at the Port Authority of New York, U.S. Steel Corporation, American Home Products, Railway Express Agency (all in New York), Lockheed Marietta Corporation (Atlanta), U.S. Postal Service and, lastly, the Food and Drug Administration (Washington, DC). He retired from his last post and moved to Santee, California. In 2006 he moved to Morgantown, WV following the death of his third wife, Frances. Steve leaves behind two sons, Jeffrey and his wife, Kathleen, of Morgantown, WV, and Guy, of Dover, NH; a step-daughter, Becky Copeland and partner, Greg Mills, of Winchester, VA; his six grandchildren (David Fedan and wife, Wendy, of Cleveland; Ashley Howley and husband, Sean, of Seattle; and Scott, of Baltimore; Steven Fedan and wife, Stacie, of Ashland, MA; Joseph, of Sanford, ME; and Alicia Mudgett and husband, Scott, of Chocorua, NH); and four great grandchildren (Rose, Jack, Hunter and Walter). He is survived by his sister, Ann Heumann and her two daughters, Lynne married to Gene Rackley of Greenville, NC, and Gail married to Larry Nickens of Greensboro, NC, and their daughter Sarah and her husband, Gray, and their son, Bradley, of Beaufort, SC. He is also survived by his nephews, Raymond Fedan and his wife, Martha, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and their children; and Dana Fedan and his wife Lucille, of Selden, NY, and their children. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sophie, his second wife, Dorothy, and his brother, Edward. Steve resided for ten years at the Village at Heritage Pointe, where he made numerous friends and spent ten happy years. There, he was known affectionately as the “Candy Man.” His family is grateful to the staff there for the loving care they provided to him. He loved being on the water, and one of his funeral options was burial at sea. Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Thursday, December 10th from 6-8 PM. The funeral service will be held at St. Thomas à Becket Episcopal Church, 75 Old Cheat Rd., Morgantown, on Friday, December 11th at 1:30 PM with The Rev. Julie B. Murdoch officiating. Interment will follow at a later date. The family requests that flowers not be sent, but that memorial donations are made in lieu of flowers to Lake Delaware Boys’ Camp, P.O. Box 31, Delhi, NY 13753.
