John Hayes Lodge, MD, was born to Mary H. and J. Dunkin Lodge in the family home in Bridgeport, West Virginia on July 19, 1925. He died on December 15, 2015 in Frisco, Texas after a full life of professional accomplishment and service to his fellow man. Dr. Lodge graduated from West Virginia University in 1947 and earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University Medical School in 1951. He was drafted into the United States Air Force (USAF) and served in Japan from 1953-1955 as the primary ophthalmologist for northern Honshu and Hokkaido. Dr. Lodge was based at the 6038th USAF Hospital in Misawa, where he also served as a consulting ophthalmologist for the United States Army. While on duty, he also served in the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, India, and Saudi Arabia. Returning to the United States in 1955, Dr. Lodge completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital at Harvard University. In 1958, Dr. Lodge set-up his ophthalmology practice in Bethesda, Maryland, where he served patients for over 50 years. From 1958 to 1970, Dr. Lodge taught clinical ophthalmology to third-year students at the George Washington University School of Medicine. He also served as an attending ophthalmologist and on several committees, including the Residents Selection Committee, at the Washington Hospital Center for 25 years. Dr. Lodge was a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, and the Maryland Academy of Ophthalmology. He loved the arts, especially classical music, and played violin for many years. Dr. Lodge was an avid photographer, documenting his many experiences around the world. He was also a passionate Washingtonian and Republican, and his correspondence and slides contain observations and views of the city, its politics and politicians from the 1960s through the 1980s. Dr. Lodge was predeceased by his only sibling, William D. Lodge, and is survived by his niece and 3 nephews and their families. An interment service will be held for Dr. Lodge at the Bridgeport Cemetery on Monday, December 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Send condolences online at www.hastingsfuneralhome.com.
