Please share a memory of Clifford Judd to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Clifford Judd Shuman, 79, of Morgantown, completed his life's journey on January 15th, 2016 at his residence. Judd passed away gently at home with family after a heroically long battle with illness. Dr. Shuman practiced dentistry in Morgantown for some 40 years prior to his retirement in 2001. He was born at home in Mannington, WV, to Robert Carlton Shuman and Clara Virginia (Judd) Shuman. As a boy, Judd's love of the woods and Native American culture inspired him to join the Boy Scouts. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1953, and was elected to The Order of the Arrow by his fellow Scouts. He was graduated from New Cumberland High School in 1954; The same year, Judd joined the United States Air Force. He greatly enjoyed his work as a medic in pre-statehood Alaska, and the many innovations of early mobile emergency medicine. After finishing his service, Judd returned to WV to attend Fairmont State College, where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma, and was graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1962. Newly married, he moved to Morgantown to attend graduate school in Gross Anatomy at WVU while working as a teaching assistant in Biology and a lab technician in the Dairy Sciences Department of the School of Agriculture. Enrolling in dental school in 1965, he earned his degree in 1969 and began working as a clinical instructor in Endodontics, where he taught until 1976. Judd worked in private practice from 1969 until his retirement in 2001. Judd was a voracious reader with wide ranging areas of study and many avocations. He was accomplished in design, draftsmanship, masonry, and carpentry; skills he put to use in constructing his parent’s first home of their own. He wrote, created jewelry, hunted with gun and bow, and was an expert carver. Too numerous to list, his skills were as varied as his interests. Judd had a keen sense of humor and appreciation for wit. He loved and respected his patients dearly, and perpetually strove to give them his very best. He believed in the ideal of service to one's fellow human beings, and equality and fairplay for all. Judd touched many lives with his gentle kindness and intelligence. He was, and will remain, deeply loved He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patsy Patton Shuman, of Morgantown; his daughter, Selena Ann Shuman and her children, Jack Edward Shuman Mason and Olivia Virginia Mason Shuman of Lansdowne, PA; his son, Brian Judd Shuman of Morgantown; his brothers- and sisters- in-law, John B. Patton of Tennessee, James H. and Barbara Patton of Texas, James E. Crago of New Cumberland, WV, Tamara and W. Ronald Brooker of Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.
