Obituary of Helen Quarrick
Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Helen P. Quarrick, of Morgantown, died on Friday, September 9, 2016 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, several days after her 85th birthday. Helen was born in Weirton, WV on September 4, 1931, the daughter of the late Steve and Arhontia Petrakis.
Helen graduated from Weir High School in 1949. In 1952, she obtained a B.S. Degree in Home Economics at WVU. Later she obtained a Masters Degree in Extension Education at the University of Wisconsin. Until she married in 1963, she worked at the county and state levels in the Cooperative Extension Service of West Virginia. She belonged to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Morgantown.
Helen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She had a lively personality and many interests. She liked to play bridge, and was well known in the local bridge community and had won several awards at a national tournament. Helen was an avid follower of the stock market and became a pretty good investor. She also loved to sing. Even when she was still in high school, she helped direct the choir of the Greek Orthodox Church in Weirton and later in her professional work she was usually the one to get everybody singing at 4-H and Extension Meetings. She especially loved ethnic music and traditions. Until the infirmities of age overtook her, many a Sunday in the summer was spent at an ethnic picnic or dance in the Pittsburgh area.
Helen had no family other than her current one in Morgantown, all of whom now survive her. They include her husband, Gene; daughter, Julie; daughter Patti Holsclaw and her husband Greg; grandchildren, Ashley and Laura. Another unhappy survivor is her cat, Norman.
In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her brothers, Gus and Nick.
In keeping with her wishes, Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown has been entrusted with cremation services and there will be no public services.
