Obituary of Valena Marie Powell

Valena Marie Powell, 91, of Halleck Road, Morgantown, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2017.

Valena was born in Morgantown, WV, on August 8, 1926, the daughter of the late Milford James Phillips and Nellie Jeffers. 

Valena was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She cherished every moment spent with her family.  She was a lifelong member of Summers Methodist Church as well as a member of the Southern Senior Monongalians. Valena was essential in the renovation reclaiming Bethel School into the Triune Community and Senior Center of which she not only served as member but as both President and Treasurer.  She also served as President of Triune Homemakers.

Throughout her life in addition to the above accomplishments, she was a charter member of the Clinton District Democratic Women’s Club; she was inducted into the WV Federation of Democratic Women’s Hall of Fame in 2001 and was elected Monongalia County Democrat of the year in 2012.

She graduated from Morgantown High School when she was sixteen years old and after raising her son and daughter made a career working as a Deputy Clerk in the Monongalia County Clerk’s Office for 20 years.

Valena is survived by her son, Larry Powell, his wife, Jennifer;  a daughter, Janice Lester,  her husband, Jim; grandchildren Eric Powell, his wife, Jill, Nicki Powell Price, Jacob Powell, his wife, Leah, and Jessica Strader, her husband, Huston; and great-grandchildren Hazen, Gabriel, Manning, Hazen, and Olivia (her little Livy).

In addition to her parents, Valena was predeceased by her husband Hazen Powell.

Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, on Saturday from 10 AM until the time of service at 1 PM with Reverend Peggy Petrich officiating.  Interment will follow at Summers Cemetery.
