Obituary of Julius Lubman

Please share a memory of Julius to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Julius ‘Joe’ Lubman, age 92, died on October 12, 2017 in Morgantown, WV. Joe was born July 15, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Israel and Mary Lubman.  He lived in Sioux City until he was drafted into the Army in 1943.  Joe served in Europe with a military engineering unit for the next two years.  After the war, Joe attended the University of Iowa on the GI Bill. The best thing that happened to him at school, and in his life, was meeting his sweetheart and future wife, Charlotte Gottlober.  They fell head over heels in love, were married on April 4, 1947, and soon moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where they raised their family.

In 1960 Joe opened his own business, Sine Tool and Die Company, in a rented garage in downtown Cleveland. Difficult times followed, but after several years the struggling company showed a profit and began to grow and grow. By the time Joe retired in 1982 the shop had grown to over 50 employees.  Joe was very proud of his accomplishment.

Joe and Charlotte enjoyed over 25 years of retirement in sunny southern California, preferring the warm weather to Cleveland’s snowy winters.  They found a house with a swimming pool and palm trees, made many friends, joined bridge clubs and cooking clubs, enjoyed entertaining, and spent quality time with their siblings, nieces and nephews.  Their grandchildren visited every summer, so they got a chance to know their ‘grammy ‘ and ‘grampy’. Joe had many walking partners, and enjoyed walking several miles in the mountains every morning. Most days you could find Joe basking in the sun with a good book and listening to classical music.  He loved to make people smile and feel welcome.  He was always ready with a joke and a compliment.  Joe and Charlotte attended concerts and plays, frequented the excellent restaurants available in the vicinity, generally led the good life, generously supported liberal causes, and loved spending every day together.

Most of all, Joe loved his family.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Philip Lubman and Hyman Lubman, sister Bess Levine, and his beloved wife Charlotte. He is survived by his three children, Alex Lubman (Stephanie), Susan Lubman-Edwards (Tom) and Ilona Lubman; six grandchildren, Jessica Escobedo (Jesse), Micah Edwards (Shannon), Leah Edwards (Dimitri), Jacob Lubman (Emily), Hannah Lubman, and Alexandra Lubman; five great-grandchildren, Katherine Courtland, twins Eva and Eliana Escobedo, Zachary Escobedo, and Stellan Pittas; and several nieces and nephews
