Obituary of William James Canady
Dr. William James Canady, 93, of Morgantown, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at his home. Bill was born on December 8, 1924 in the Bronx, New York, a son to the late William LeRoy and Florence Datson Canady.
Bill obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Fordham University in New York and his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Ottawa through the Canadian National Research Council. Bill was a professor of Biochemistry at WVU for 40 years where almost every medical, pharmacy, dental, and nursing student took his class. He was a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, as well as the American Chemical Society and the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and he had numerous publications in the journals Biochemical Pharmacology, Immunochemistry, Canadian Journal of Chemistry, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Transactions of the Faraday Society, and Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications.
Bill supported himself through school with professional portrait photography, and photography became a joy through the rest of his life. He was a founding member of the Mountaineer Chapter of the National Audubon Society. He was a lifelong lover of music, especially classical, Appalachian folk, and jazz.
He is survived by his wife, Loulie Dodson Canady; sister-in-law, Susan Gardiner of Montrose, VA, and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, William is preceded in death by his daughter, Valerie Canady, who was a victim of the Pan American Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 22, 1988.
Cremation services will be provided by Omega crematory. Friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 20, from 10am until 11am. A Memorial service will be held at 11am at the funeral home with Rev. Michael Hadaway officiating.
