I have known Dr. Johnson for more than 30 years at WVU as a colleague and a friend. I noticed and appreciated his in depth knowledge of thermal engineering and his rigorous analysis, coming up at the end with seemingly simple solutions to complex problems. In this regard I learned a lot from him.
I will always remember his sense of humor and his warm smiles.
With my sincerest condolences to his family I remain,
Ismail B. Celik
Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
West Virginia University.

Dr. Johnson was a truly unique individual with many layers. He was my undergraduate advisor from 1983-86 and challenged me in many ways. The day I told or informed him that I would like to get a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering he fell out of his chair laughing, if you would have seen my transcripts you would have laughed as well. That was "I will show you" kinda moment, several years later he was the first sign my dissertation defense sheet.
I would help him do many things that graduate students do for their professors like move furniture and clean out storage sheds, very typical. The most memorable thing he ask me to do was to drive his grandkids around the back of the engineering building in the Baja car, I saw those 3 little kids last night at the funeral home and apparently they enjoyed it as well. Somethings are just worth the time and effort.
One final thanks to Dr. Johnson, he taught me math, useful math. Without his math lessons in graduate Heat transfer I would have never achieved my degree. Thanks for the jokes, appropriate and not appropriate, Swedish stories and for caring, you will be truly missed by many.

Dr. Eric Johnson achieved in his life a professional career that I much respected. Eric’s career was appreciated to include both productive tenures in academia as well as impressive experiences in industry. In his academic career, Eric was regarded as having advanced both the breadth and the depth of several chosen engineering disciplines. In particular, the thermal energy and fluid dynamic fields were most benefited through Eric’s scholarly educational endeavors and his rigorous research pursuits. I appreciated Eric being my colleague in our journeys at WVU and a partner in our adventures in Morgantown.

Please accept my deep condolences. I had the pleasure of playing soccer with Eric as a team mate and I also had the pleasure of talking to him many times at the College of Engineering at WVU as a colleague. Eric is a fantastic person and all around nice guy, a person you can never forget, he left lots of good memories in my mind.

I have many happy memories of Eric & Phyllis of their early days in Chicago. Eric was 15 years older than me,but he was a lot of fun at our family gatherings (phyliss was my cousin) We had quite a few family gatherings at Thanksgiving & Christmas, some at Phyliss parents house & also at Erics parents house. They left Chicago shortly after graduating from college,I believe, so our lives took different paths. But I cant help but smile when I think of them. They are together again. God bless & comfort your family at this difficult time.
