Dear Waugh family, I just discovered today Lillian’s passing. I am heartbroken to learn the news. Lillian was a mentor and friend to me at WVU from 1993-1999. She even attended my wedding. I have such fond memories of her...our countless lunches, our long talks, her continuous encouragement and steadfast belief in me as a person and my academic and activist work. Lillian touched many lives and was a true role model for so many women. I pray you find comfort in knowing how truly blessed I feel to have spent time with her. She will be deeply missed. My sincerest sympathies. With love, Lynnette Chapman Ryan, WVU 1996 and 1999

Dear Dave,
Paolo and I send our warm sympathy to you, your daughter and your whole family. I remember when you were in Paris with Lilian, eating in some cafés outside since you had your baby with you. Of course, I remember well working with you when you were in sabbatical in the Institut Pasteur, twenty years ago. I feel close with you at this difficult time.

I'm so sorry to read this. I worked for her at the CWS in the early and mid-90s, and she was always there, offering support and advice.... as well as a couple letter of recommendations. I loved and admired her - she was an incredible woman. You all are in my thoughts.

My sympathies go out to Lillian's family and close friends. I am deeply sorry to learn of her passing. I first met her in 1974 in Morgantown, when I was a student, and I soon learned how bright, committed, inclusive, and joyful she was about her life and work. I am grateful to her for her leadership on so many issues, and for the example she has set for others to come. This world is a far better place because she was here. I will certainly miss the occasional communications and visits we had. Lillian, I hope you know that I appreciate your friendship and commitment over these decades. I will miss you.
