Obituary of Criss Carr
Criss Carr, Jr, 94, of Morgantown, entered heaven on Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Mapleshire Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.
Criss was born on July 24, 1924, to the late Criss Carr and Bertha Kesling in Gassaway, WV. He served on the USS Wichita in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific theater.
In 1946 he married the late Mary Jane Keener. Over the years they resided in Clarksburg, Grantsville, Flatwoods, and Morgantown. He retired in 1979 after working 33 years for Hope Gas Co. as a welder.
Criss and Mary belonged to the National Foxhunters Association and spent many hours participating and competing in foxhound dog shows. While living in Grantsville he served as President of the local fox-hunters association. He was also instrumental in obtaining public telephone service in Calhoun County.
In Morgantown, he was an active member of the Community United Methodist Church. One of his joys was participating in the church choir.
Criss was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 66 years, Mary Jane Carr. He is survived by two sons, Ralph Melvin (Martha) Carr of Darlington, SC and J. Keith Carr (Carolyn) of Morgantown.
Grandchildren include Michael (CJ) Carr of Little Rock, SC; Mary Ellen (Shawn) Tunstall of Darlington, SC; Amy Carr of Morgantown; Jonathan (Wendy) Carr of Bridgeport, WV; Jeffrey (Jessica) Carr of Morgantown; and Carrie (Charlie) Hall of Morgantown.
Great grandchildren include Ashley Tunstall, Nicholas Tunstall, Cristofer Carr, Josie Law, Anthony Carr, Allison Carr, Adam Carr, Hallie Hall, Henry Hall, Annabel Goddard, and Joey Goddard.
He is also survived by his sister in law, Susan Carr of Frametown, WV, and a brother in law, Gerald Hott of Gaithersburg, MD. and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, June Robinson, Joy Rollyson, and Gratton Carr.
Friends will be received at the Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., on Monday, Oct. 22nd from 5-7 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Oct. 23rd, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Lisa Crone and Rev. Neil Leftwich officiating. In accordance with his wishes, Criss will then be cremated and inurned in the family cemetery in Braxton County.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Criss’s memory to the Community United Methodist Church 1966 Grafton Road, Morgantown, WV 26508.
