Obituary of Gordon Donald Shaffer
Gordon Donald Shaffer, 83, of Morgantown passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, January 26, at his home.
Gordon was born on April 25, 1935, the son of the late Walter A. and Nellie M. Shaffer. He was a hard working loving husband, father, and grandfather that always ensured that his family was taken care of.
He retired from Beaumont Glass and Consol. Upon his retirement, he worked for the Monongalia County School Board. He also worked for a brief period of time at Chemical Leaman. He was proud to serve as the President of the American Flint Glass Workers Local Union and an actively involved member of the UMWA. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandsons, and great-grandson. He also loved gardening (especially his "Shaffer" tomatoes), maintaining his lawn, camping and the long hikes he took his grandsons on at Cedar Creek State Park, fishing and hunting. In retirement, he traveled with his wife and family on many bus trips.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ilene F. Smyth Shaffer, two daughters; Darlene F. Manley and husband Mike, Valerie J. Whetzel and husband Kevin and one son; Gordon A. Shaffer and wife Juli, 5 grandsons; Chesdon J. Haught, Kevin G. Whetzel, Kyle G. Whetzel, Matthew T. Shaffer and Mark T. Shaffer and wife Amanda and one great-grandson; Maverick Donald Shaffer. He is also survived by three sisters; Betty J. Canfield, Martha J. Chisler, and Bonnie L. Smith and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown on Monday, January 28, from 5 – 8 pm and again on Tuesday, January 29, from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 am with Pastor Lynda Masters officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
