I have only now learned of Paul's passing. I am truly grieved. I had the opportunity to observe his teaching when he was under tenure review at Marietta College and can truly say he was one of the best teachers I have ever had the privilege to observe. He made a tremendous impact on his students and was a gentle soul who treated his teaching as a sacred vocation. The world is diminished by his loss.

I first met Paul a little over a year ago when I came back to graduate school at WVU where he had just joined the faculty. We didn’t interact much outside of seminar where I noticed that he asked some really good questions of the speakers.
I only really got to know Paul later, as the teaching assistant for the senior laboratory course each semester at WVU where he was the professor. In the spring of last year Paul taught that course with me as his TA. I spent a few years in industry before coming back to school and had forgotten nearly all the theory I’d learned in undergrad and I was just trying to get caught up, even in January. Paul was new to this course and regardless of where I was he leaned on me to learn how things worked and to make changes for improved student learning. It was always fun working with Paul and I felt like he really genuinely appreciated my input on things. Paul made several changes that really improved the student’s experience, he even ordered a fluids lab that he was VERY excited to show off and learn. I was put in a video with Paul narrating for the department.
I am echoing what others have said but conversations with Paul were always fun, energetic and unexpected. In a typical lab session Paul would tell me about his family, his sons, stepdaughters, then something technical and obscure such as: Fermat’s last theorem, astrophotography, catalyst beds for the plastic industry and how we could get rich writing a patent for an improved one, his baseball career, how he sold sunglasses on Morgantown’s high street to make money in graduate school (right in front of the discount store where he bought them), how he learned to teach cybersecurity from watching youtube videos, the waterfall he was designing for Debbie, apps he wanted to create, and on. At first I tied to keep up and give input but I quickly learned it was better to just listen.
Even though I only knew him briefly for a year, I consider him a friend. He was an awesome person to spend time with and I wish I’d have known the extent of his obsession with movies - we could’ve had some great exchanges about that.

Dr. Daniell will be remembered as an incredible professor and it was always a joy to take a class with him, I must say I have taken more classes with him than any other professor. During his lectures he was always giving us advice for safety in industry or is personal hobbies such as astronomy (https://youtu.be/ZsbM7Ag3tDE) there was always something interesting going on that anyone would take an interest to. I remember one time he even invited me to take part in a mock investment competition with him, Dr. Benjamin Thomas and myself - he even signed the Wall Street journal to the winner as Warren Buffett he always had a great sense of comedy. Speaking of which I had the great pleasure as dressing up as him during Halloween and he was more than happy to put on a similar outfit that day.
Thank you for everything,
Derrick Houston (I was told you always thought I had the perfect name for a petroleum engineer.)

Paul and I were friends and co-workers at Union Carbide for many years. I was his boss for much of this time at Carbide. Chris and I knew Michelle his first wife who died of lung cancer when his kids were still very young. Soo Sad. He was so smart and personable and he was a jewel of a friend. Paul and I played golf against each other many times at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane WV. He was so talented and could could play equally left handed or right handed. After he won the Kanawha Valley golf tournament there was an article in the Charleston Newspaper about how Paul putted both right and left handed during the tournament. I know he was asked to go the New York Yankee's training camp after he graduated with his undergraduate degree but he decided to pursue a PHD degree in Chemical Engineering instead of pursuing a baseball career. I will miss him forever.

I am so sad about Paul, he and my late husband Jonathan were very good friends. We had the pleasure of dancing at Paul and Debra's wedding. The joy and love was felt by all. When my husband was dying from ALS Paul made the trip down from Parkersburg to spend the day with him. This picture is from Feb. 15, 2016. Two wonderful, exceptional men gone before their time. My deepest sympathy Debbie.

I was very sad to learn about Paul. I have fond memories of him as a grad student and leader in the chemical engineering department at WVU, and then to follow his progress as a major leader for industry and academia. I also enjoyed our 'friendly' card games and longtime friendship!
My deepest condolences to the family of Paul. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,

Paul was one of the most impactful friends/professors throughout my entire college career. He was responsible for my development as a young engineer, but his actions extended beyond the classroom. I'll never forget the multiple conversations we had outside of class about our love for baseball and golf. Everyone who crossed paths with Paul knows that he truly cared about those around him and always went out of his way to help others. My condolences and prayers go out to Paul's family and loved ones.

Paul was a valued member of the Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society in Charleston, WV. He is fondly remembered for his friendliness, sense of humor and his extensive knowledge about astronomy and incredible astrophotography. Many of our members shared many fun evenings looking at the beauty of the night sky. Members of KVAS extend our deepest sympathy to Pauls wife and sons.
