Obituary of Freda Mae Kerns
Please share a memory of Freda Mae to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Freda Kerns, 98, returned to the Lord on Tuesday, September 30, 2020. Born in Fairmont to the late Jesse Lynn Kerns and Huldah May Powell, Freda lived most of her life in Morgantown.
A homemaker and mother to four children, she enjoyed her church friends and gardening. She was a long time fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Steelers.
For several decades, Freda was employed as a home health aide with Visiting Homemakers. She retired, but was called back into action in her 80’s to bring comfort to those in need.
One of the charter members of Morgantown’s Church of Christ, she delighted in the word of the Lord, her well-worn Bible a testament to that. Her strength and faith served as an inspiration to all.
One of thirteen children, Freda was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 30 years, Jefferson A. Kerns; and two sons, Gerald Ray and Thomas Michael Kerns, and son-in-law Raymond “Butch” Utt.
Family members left to celebrate her life include her daughter, Dorothy Jean Utt, and son, Dennis and Mary Virginia Kerns all of Morgantown; six grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and two great great granddaughters.
Friends may join the family to honor Freda‘s life and legacy at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Westover, WV, on Monday, October 5, 2020 at 2:30 p.m., with Pastor John Sausen officiating and interment to follow.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Sundale Nursing Home staff for the excellent care they provided Freda for the last eight years of her life. For the love and support of neighbors and friends, we thank you.
To honor Freda’s life, please consider spending time with an older relative or friend. Their day will be brightened, and so will yours. The family requests that no flowers be sent to the funeral home and that contributions in Freda’s memory be made to Sundale Nursing Home 800 J. D. Anderson Drive or to Morgantown Church of Christ 361 Scott Avenue.
